Acoustic Recording of Brahms
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was the first great musician to have his voice recorded. Edison invented the phonograph twenty years before Brahms's death and fortunately his invention was used to record famous people of the time. The recordings were made on cylinders and were of poor sound quality. For the last 20 seconds of this half minute extract Brahms can be heard playing part of his Hungarian Dance #1.
Note: The cylinder music recording has been analyzed - see for example the technical article "Brahms at the Piano: An Analysis of Data from the Brahms Cylinder" by Jonathan Berger and Charles Nichols, Leonardo Music Journal, vol 4 pp23-30, 1994. Some people doubt that the speaker is Brahms

26. Furtwängler On Brahms
Original translation of an essay by Furtwaengler, discussing the significance of johannes brahms and campaigning against decaying European spiritual life and artistic decline.
http://members.aol.com/abelard2/furt.htm
BRAHMS AND THE CRISIS OF OUR TIME
Precisely with great artists we frequently observe, that from midlife on, they begin to change their posture toward their environment and their own art. Should there exist in their youth a full accord between the demands of the environment and those of the self, and be their art in this period as much "modern" as an expression of their personality, it shall be different in later maturity. With holding-one's-own and making-one's-point, with the conquest of the world commences at the same time the detachment from it, and therewith reflection upon the truest and deepest requirements of one's own nature. And so the way is cleared for the most personal and most universal, that such men have to say. It is the same if we cast our eyes on Goethe or Rembrandt, on Bach or Beethoven. Linked thereto is a growing estrangement with respect to the environment, an isolation, an outgrowing of one's own time. Brahms, too, in his way, underwent such a development. If he was, in the first decades of his effectiveness, in which he laid his claim to fame, a thoroughly "contemporary musician," who spoke the language of his time, he detached himself later more and more from his immediate present. Precisely the most mature later works, around the Fourth Symphony, or the Double Concerto, were rejected at their first appearance, and what is more, by his friends in part. The publisher of a Brahms biography writes openly of the "flop" of the Double Concerto in Vienna, that he attended in his time: "Where did we have our ears in those days!"

Sonata Va 1/2/Marchenbilder Schumann (Master Musicians Series) Background: As a young man, Johannes Brahms was a close friend of Robert and Clara Schumann. They socialized publicly and Johannes was often in the Schumann home. When Robert Schumann died, Johannes continued his friendship with Clara. Clara Schumann, herself a renowned pianist, gave concerts that showcased her late husband’s work to support herself and her children. It is not known whether Johannes had always loved Clara or if the affection sprang from the relationship that grew after Robert’s death. History does tell us that Brahms professed his love for Clara though they never married.
For more detailed biographies of each of these classical composers, refer to:
    Johannes Brahms
, and Robert Schumann , by Betty Fry.

Assignment Choices: 1. Write a dialogue that might have taken place between Clara and Johannes after Robert’s death. Begin the conversation with Brahms confessing to Clara that he loves her. Use your imagination. Here are some questions to get you started thinking:
    - What might Brahms say to Clara to first open up the subject of his love for her?

    http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/9275/brahms.htm

Amazon Products Schumann (Master Musicians Series) Robert Schumann's evergreen ‘ Piano Concerto in A minor' is a perfect introduction to the work of this famous and very prolific composer. The ‘ Opus 54, Third Movement ' of this joyous Romantic concerto is playing for me now as I write. It started off in what I can only describe as a blaze of color with a solo piano taking center stage. A running theme, still on the piano, but with a softer orchestral accompaniment, soon leads to the famous march like tune, first given quietly on the strings, and then again taken up by the piano. The sense of celebration throughout the music is infectious. And if you like piano music, then you will like this piece. Schumann wrote it for his talented wife Clara, who became an influential teacher as well as a notable composer, and went on to become the most important woman pianist of the 19 th century. Born on 8 th June, 1810, Robert Schumann, was the youngest son of August Schumann, an author and translator of Romantic literature, and a ‘notable citizen and bookseller' of the town of Zwickau in Saxony. Successful as he was though, August Schumann suffered from attacks of severe nervous anxiety. Robert's mother, who gave him his first music lessons, lived in an exaggerated state of romance, and was subject to sudden violent passions and sentimentalism.
