The Late Romantics
Johannes Brahms
Born: Hamburg, May 7, 1833
Died: Vienna, April 3, 1897
Born to a poor family in the slums of Hamburg, Germany, Brahms studied music as best he was able while supporting himself by playing piano at bars and brothels and by turning out arrangements of light music. His early compositions continued in the progressive direction of the waning romanticism: huge sonatas piano trios , and other works like the Piano Quartet in G minor , for the finale of which Brahms utilizes a flashy gypsy melody. But Brahms later abandoned this track, devoting himself instead to synthesizing the Classical forms with the almost by now forgotten early Romanticism , with its slowly unraveling sense of tonality. In so doing, Brahms created a repertoire of works that amounts to a glowing and majestic apotheosis of the musical traditions of the nineteenth-century.

Der treue Johannes
oder: Brahms zum 100. Todestag
Lieber Johannes!

Died: April 3, 1897. Vienna, Austria
In his own words...

"It is not hard to compose, but it is wonderfully hard to let the superfluous notes fall under the table." German composer. Brahms created a style that blended the lyrical and intellectual and served as a contrast to the progressive style of the New German School.
Johannes Brahms grew up surrounded by a practical world of music. His father was a double bass player, and Brahms took early lessons in piano, theory and composition. As a teenager, he gained intimate familiarity with serious and popular styles, arranging music for his father's orchestra and playing piano in local dance halls. At twenty he began touring as an accompanist and began to make important contacts. Among these were Robert and Clara Schumann , both of whom had a lasting effect on his life and career. Robert, in his role as a critic, first brought Brahms' name to the notice of the German public, calling him a "young eagle." Clara became an emotional focus for Brahms, one that would last throughout his life.
Brahms spent many years working as a conductor and pianist, hoping for a prestigious appointment that never materialized. He did, however, serve two years as director of the Berlin Singakademie. In 1868 he settled in Vienna, where he would remain for the rest of his life. He soon composed two works that assured him both fame and financial security: the

I hummed it to my children without a thought as to who might have composed its lovely sound, or why it came to be a part of the composer's repertoire. And I am now both intrigued and delighted to discover how much more pleasure there is in music when one knows something of the composer, and the reasoning behind its making. 'Cradle Song' was a variation on an Austrian folk song which Brahms wrote for the first child of his Viennese friend, Berta Porubszky. The piano arrangement to which I am listening, is a particularly well known version. The calm soothing melody sings out sweetly, while the gently rocking accompaniment and rippling keyboard elaborations are heard above it. If it were evening it would certainly be sleep inducing. But it is early morning, and instead I find it utterly relaxing, making for a gentle start to a new day that can sometimes be a little too rushed for comfort.

Brahms was born in Hamburg to the son of a double-bass player and his older seamstress wife. The violinist Joseph Joachim introduced him to many leading musicians of the day including Schumann who hailed him as a genius. He moved to Vienna in 1863 where he earned his living as a conductor and teacher. Brahms was one of the greatest 19th century symphonists after Beethoven and he was regarded as the foremost romantic composer of instrumental music in classical forms. He contributed masterpieces to almost every genre. His music was the object of bitter attacks by the followers of Wagner and Liszt Brahms was a gruff humorous man tolerated by those who valued his genius. He never married and never left Europe. Johannes Brahms Works Brahms wrote four symphonies, massive in structure, and all the result of long periods of work and revision. MIDI FILE - from 3rd Symphony: 4th mov. The two early Serenades have their own particular charm, while the Variations on a Theme by Haydn enjoy enormous popularity, examples of a form in which Brahms had complete mastery.

    Biography
    Johannes Brahms
Composer Germany Born 7 May 1833
    Died 3 Apr 1897
Hailed as Beethoven's successor, Brahms was a Romantic composer deeply loyal to Classical forms and publicly opposed to new trends, such as those found in the music of Liszt and Wagner. Brahms' talent was appreciated at an early age by Robert Schumann, and fame came his way with his German Requiem, first performed in Vienna in 1869. The many intense, stormy - but never superficially showy - works of this short, gruff, sometimes crude man reveal great passions. Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg in 1833, into a poor but happy family. His two childhood passions were toy soldiers and music. He was a brilliant young pianist, but his first job was playing in the dockland brothels near his home, an experience which he seems to have hated. When he was 17, he set off on a concert tour and met the famous violinist, Joseph Joachim. Impressed with Brahms' talent, Joachim arranged for him to meet the composer Liszt in Weimar. Liszt played Brahms' Sonata in C at a house recital, and proceeded to heap praise on the young visitor. When Liszt played his own Piano Sonata, however, Brahms fell asleep; the offence was forgiven by Liszt, but never forgotten by Brahms. Brahms moved away in 1857, and was appointed music director at Detmold, near Hanover, where he taught and conducted. His first orchestral compositions appeared here: the two Serenades and the mighty First Piano Concerto, one of his most passionate and turbulent works.

Johaness Brahms (1833-1897) To some people, Brahms has been seen as something of an enigma in the course of music development. The Romantic movement was well underway in the first half of the 19th century, set in early motion by Beethoven and then kindled by Mendelssohn , Berlioz and Schumann, before being transformed by Liszt, Verdi and Wagner . It seemed like all composers of the day, despite differences in style and scale, were united in seeking a new freer means of expression. Brahms however chose the stricter conventions of the classical period, and as a result received much criticism from his more adventurous peers and later composers. Yet Brahms demonstrated time and again that it wasn't necessary to abandon the old forms in forwarding the ideals of Romanticism. Compared to many musicians and composers, Brahms was a late developer. Brahms' early music career was as a pianist giving recitals in his late teens and 20s, and his exceptionl skills on this instrument brought him attention from the violinist Joachim, and Robert and Clara Schumann who were to befriend him. It was not until he reached his 30s that he began to compose with any regularity, and his first Symphony was complete in 1876 at the age of 43. Part of this reticence was the enormous historical figure of Beethoven in whose musical footsteps Brahms was to follow, and indeed his music was compared to Beethoven to the extent that the first Symphony was dubbed "Beethoven's 10th". Having put those first tentative steps behind him, Brahms went on to compose many great works in the remaining 2 decades of his life. His legacy is the melding of form and content, of powerful expression yet great economy.

    Johannes Brahms
