Havergal Brian was born William Brian in 1876 in Dresden, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He became choirboy and organist at local churches and also learned the violin, cello and piano. Brian began composing at the age of 12 and made his London debut in 1907. For a number of years he fell into obscurity, although he continued to compose. After something of a musical comeback in the 1950's and '60's, Brian died on 28th November 1972 in Shoreham-on-Sea. His musical output includes 32 symphonies, 5 operas, 5 suites, 3 concertos and more than 100 songs. The multi-media collection at Keele is on deposit from the Havergal Brian Society and comprises books, photocopies, tapes, scores, theses and cuttings encompassing the life and work of the composer. The collection is listed, and there are no restrictions on access. Please see opening hours

Volume One: British Music
Edited and Introduced by
Malcolm MacDonald
MUSICIANS ON MUSIC NO. 1
'Brian is compulsive reading, serious, perceptive…prescient, and always stylish and literate … I can't wait for Volume 2.'
John Cox Southern Evening Echo Havergal Brian (1876–1972) was not only Britain’s most prolific symphonist (he composed 32); he was also a comparative productive musical journalist. His articles, reviews, editorials, personality profiles and columns of comment on contemporary events – sometimes pseudonymous, often unsigned – reveal him as a highly perceptive if sometimes idiosyncratic observer, with a startling breadth of interest and a fund of personal reminiscence, many of whose insights were well in advance of his time. This first volume of selections of his writings brings together many of Brian’s principale writings on the composers and events of the British Musical Renaissance – from polemical articles written when actively campaigning for his fellow-composers in the Midlands before World War I to more considered appraisals of the inter-War period. As well as discussing a wide range of composers, from Elgar and Delius to Britten and Billy Mayerl, he can be found here reviewing festivals, adjudicating at brass-band championships at the Crystal Palace (and watching the Palace burn down in 1936), proposing schemes for the encouragement of orchestral music, and casting a critical eye on the burgeoning power and influence of the B.B.C.

http://www.lsso.co.uk/webmusic/havergalbrianweb.html
Havergal Brian and the LSSO The LSSO were the first orchestra to make a commercial recording of Havergal Brian’s music. Symphonies Nos. 10 and 21, conducted by James Loughran and Eric Pinkett respectively, were recorded at the De Monfort Hall, Leicester in 1972. The producer was Robert Simpson - a great champion of Brian - and the LP was released by Unicorn Records to great critical acclaim in 1973. A special edition of the television programme Aquarius gave considerable coverage to the recording session and a camera crew also joined members of the orchestra during a visit they made to the composer’s home in Shoreham. A copy of this programme is kept in the LSSO archives. The LP achieved the accolade of being included in the EMG Newsletter nominations for the top classical releases for the year of 1973. Sadly, the composer died prior to the disc being released. Sound clips: 1) 10th Symphony Sound clips: 2) 21st Symphony Following the success of the Unicorn issue, a second Brian album was recorded in 1974 at Hove Town Hall and Leicester De Montfort Hall with the conducting being shared by Laszlo Heltay and Eric Pinkett. This CBS release includes Brian’s setting of the 23 rd Psalm which clearly belongs to the mainstream British choral tradition of Vaughan Williams and Parry. The English Suite "Rustic Scenes" contains some highly original music which is enormous fun to listen to. The suite also includes a beautiful Reverie for strings.

George Butterworth Rudolf Schwarz included Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad in his LSSO concert at the De Montfort Hall in 1964. Another delightful Butterworth miniature for orchestra, The Banks of Green Willow, was played as an encore by Eric Pinkett and the orchestra in the same concert hall in 1968 and it was widely performed by the 1969 LSSO during the Berlin tour. It also appeared regularly in many LSSO concerts in subsequent years. The recording featured below was recorded by the BBC in February 1969 for an edition of Youth Orchestras of the World. Press articles relating to A Shropshire Lad and The Banks of Green Willow can be seen in the reviews section of this website. Sound Clip: Banks of the Green Willow

WILL I LET THIS IN?
Some thoughts on the music of Havergal Brian,
from AARON RABUSHKA
I was intrigued by the call of the Havergal Brian Society for recommendations on which Brian works to promote and which to present first to new audiences and I herewith offer my feelings on the matter. I will not deny that these recommendations are based on my subjective opinions of the Brian works that I know I do not claim that this knowledge is all-encompassing nor am I attempting here to assess the best or worst of his output. My own first exposure to Brian was on an old BBC Music Showcase broadcast in which Antony Hopkins presented Symphony No 12. I remember being intrigued by the biography and music that he (Hopkins) offered and wanted to know and hear more. When I mention Brian's name to the classical music enthusiasts that I know they link it only to ('oh! no!') the Gothic if they recognize it at all. It is my unwavering belief that accessibility lies with the listener rather than with the composer 'will I let this in?' is the former's decision. Furthermore, I do not confuse 'I don't like it' with 'it isn't accessible', and with that in mind have picked out those works I think would most likely enthrall a new listener and entice him to explore further. From the miscellaneous orchestral works I would suggest the Festal Dance and the Tinker's Wedding overture as the most likely to succeed with those new to Brian's music. They are short enough that reluctant concert producers may let them through and they could speak directly to people who listen to little other than John Williams film scores (and note that this is not a slam against Williams or his listeners). The

3 Aaron J Rabushka WILL I LET THIS IN? Requiem The preparation of functional performing editions will help the Brian cause indispensibly there are few musicians as dedicated as the conductor who led No 16 from a photocopy of the manuscript (which, to be quite honest, would embarass me if I were to put it in front of any performer). The rest of what remains is the persuasion (diplomatic, perhaps financial) of concert producers whose decisions are often conservative and heavily based on brand-name recognition to give Brian the place of honor that he deserves on concert platforms. This plant is collected for food when it is known as Marsh Samphire, and is meant to be a poor man's asparargus. It tastes like a mouthful of seawater to me. The plant roots in the estuarine mud in salinities of about 3.2% but variable from full salinity with an incoming spring tide, to fresh water running out over the top of the sea water.
