Benjamin Britten is born at Lowestoft, 22 November 1913, and died at Aldeburgh, 4 December 1976. He studied with Frank Bridge as a boy and in 1930 entered the RCM. In 1934 he heard Wozzeck and planned to study with Berg , but opposition at home stopped him. The next year he began working for the GPO Film Unit, where one of his collaborators was Auden: together they worked on concert works as well, Auden's social criticism being matched by a sharply satirical and virtuoso musical style (orchestral song cycle Our Hunting Fathers 1936). Stravinsky and Mahler were important influences, but Britten's effortless technique gave his early music a high personal definition, notably shown in orchestral works (Bridge Variations for strings, 1937; Piano Concerto, 1938; Violin Concerto, 1939) and songs (Les illuminations, setting Rimbaud for high voice and strings, 1939). In 1939 he left England for the USA, with his lifelong companion Peter Pears; there he wrote his first opera, to Auden's libretto (Paul Bunyan, 1941). In 1942 he returned and, partly stimulated by

A Young Person's Guide to the orchestra (Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell "), schoolmuziek ("Let's make an Opera"), religieuze muziek ("Noye's Fludde", "War Requiem"), kamermuziek enz.

Biography
Benjamin Britten
Composer England Born 22 Nov 1913
Died 4 Dec 1976 Britten emerged as a talented musician at an early age. Stravinsky and Mahler were both important influences on his work. His industry as a composer was indefatigable, and it is his work which has greatly contributed towards the establishment of permanent opera houses in England, Scotland and Wales. Benjamin Britten's father was a professional man, his mother an amateur singer and they lived in some comfort. The boy from the margins of Lowestoft, England's most easterly place, was a musical prodigy who wrote his first piece at the age of four, and had already composed a number of large works by the time he was 12. In 1926, he became a composition pupil of Frank Bridge, who was a skilled all-round musician. In 1930, Britten went to the Royal College of Music to study piano and composition. His early 'Phantasy Quartet' for oboe and string trio was accepted, and played at the Florence International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1934, successfully launching Britten into the international music world. At the Salzburg Festival in 1937, his 'Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge' were also acclaimed. By now, Britten had met his lifelong partner, the tenor Peter Pears, whose rather special voice was set to advantage in many of Britten's works. They were both in the USA at the outbreak of war in 1939. While there, Britten composed the first of his stage works, the operetta 'Paul Bunyan' in 1941. However, after only a few US performances in New York, Britten withdrew it until 1976 when it was revised and staged at Snape Maltings.

Encyclopedia

Britten, Benjamin Britten, Benjamin, , English composer. Britten is considered the most significant British composer since Purcell. As a youth he composed instrumental works, displaying technical brilliance and colorful orchestration. One example, The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1946), written for a film, is based on a theme by Purcell. His most characteristic expression is achieved in vocal music. His many song cycles and choral works include A Boy Was Born (1933) and A Ceremony of Carols (1942). Britten's great War Requiem (1962), based on the bitter war poems of Wilfred Owen, was sung at the dedication in England of the reconstructed Coventry Cathedral, destroyed during World War II. In his operas, which include Paul Bunyan Peter Grimes The Rape of Lucretia The Turn of the Screw A Midsummer Night's Dream (1960), and Death in Venice (1973), he displayed a sensitivity to text and a fondness for variation technique, dynamic dissonance, and the use of ground basses. See biographies by I. Holst (2d ed. 1970), E. W. White (new ed. 1970), and H. Carpenter (1992); study by P. Evans (1979).
