83. Steve Earle: Brown Daily Herald, 12 Apr. '02
Fortunately, Steve earle has been writing some of the finest songs of the past tenyears, and these gems are what carry “Sidetracks.” © 2002 brown Daily

New This Week SIDETRACKS
Steve Earle by Morgan Clendaniel
While Steve Earle has yet to put out a follow up to the tour-de-force mix of rock, country, and bluegrass that was Transcendental Blues , his latest release, Sidetracks , at least provides fans something with which to satisfy their appetites. A collection of previously unreleased material, Sidetracks reaffirms Earle’s status as one of the finest contemporary country-rock songsters. With the exemplary songwriter backed by a variety of crack sidemen ranging from the V-Roys to the Supersuckers, as well as various incarnations of Earle’s touring band, the Dukes, these songs are nearly flawless. Earle’s characteristic build of twang-tinged rock backs the bittersweet, but inspirational, Some Dreams . While the claim that “some dreams don’t ever come true, but some dreams do,” could be gracing the latest Britney ballad, Earle’s earnest delivery renders it surprisingly believable. An alternative version of Ellis Unit One , an Earle classic, slowly paints an indelible picture of the evils of the death penalty with an intensity sure to give anyone goosebumps. In addition to his own material, Earle adds several covers to Sidetracks . Aside from a poor version of Dylan’s My Back Pages , (the only weak song on the album), Earle ably covers the reggae Slickers, the country rock pioneers Flying Burrito Brothers and even provides a wonderful rendition of Nirvana’s Breed . Listeners feel both Nirvana’s influence on artists of all genres and Earle’s uncanny ability as a performer as he turns

Earle Brown, 1926–2002
Composing in the Air July 31 - August 6, 2002 he last generation of famous modernists was born in the 1920s, and they seem to be passing away before our eyes. Earle Brown, one of the last figures who created the American musical revolution of the 1960s, died on July 2. (In a curious coincidence, he died the same day as jazz bassist Ray Brown, his exact contemporary, creating a week of musical mourning confusion: "Did you hear Earle Brown died?" "No, that was Ray Brown," and vice versa.) Within the context of what's been called the "New York School"—John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Christian Wolff, whose freedom-inspiring musics so complemented each other—Brown always struck me as, in a way, the most European. European in his elegance, his polish, his expensive cigarettes, and the way his music fit into the sound world of the European avant-garde. Cage, Wolff, and Feldman wrote music in which conventional expressivity was sabotaged, precluded by chance processes or some procedure that prevented the performer from imposing his or her own emotional curve. Although Brown's graphic scores were not that far from Cage's and Feldman's conceptually, his music seemed to be all expressivity.

Located in a first ring suburb at the junction of two freeways, the buildings form an oasis of a pastoral setting around the original farmyard and watering area. The inn links the three houses and the carriage house previously scattered on the site. The old equestrian show ring/hippodrome, formerly a dirt-floored shell is now a full service meeting and dining facility for 1,100 people with an extensive catering facility. Due to the success of the initial development, Blumentals /Architecture Inc was responsible for the second phase of the Farm development, adding the final building and linking the buildings into one integrated facility.

It took someone willing to take a small risk to start the process of renewed hope and an opportunity for long-range plans and dreams. That someone is Betty Ziskovsky, a 6th grade teacher at Earle Brown Elementary School, a K-6 school, located in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Last summer when Betty was about to begin her third year of teaching at the inner city school, she was concerned about the lack of extra money for fieldtrips and classroom needs. Her allotted budget was $0 and if a fieldtrip was planned, teachers were limited as to the amount they could charge students. As team leader for the 6th grade level, Betty was instrumental in changing the attitude from “We can’t afford it” to “Yes, we can do it!” Worries about sending merchandise home with students or collecting money due, had resulted in very limited fundraising efforts. “C’mon everyone,” Betty said, “we can afford to risk $144 (the cost of one case of lollipops)”! Her offer to run the sale out of her classroom and do all the ordering and bookkeeping was enough to convince her colleagues to take the risk. By ordering her lollipops from FundRaising.Com, Betty actually eliminated any risk with our convenient terms that included free shipping, a 30-day payment option, and 45-day return policy.

VICTORIA EARLE MATTHEWS 1861-1898
VICTORIA EARLE MATTHEWS
In an humble cottage, May 27, 1861, at Fort Valley, Ga., was born Victoria Earle. She is described as a bright, lovable child, always planning some new game or leading her playmates in some new sport. At school, she easily led her classes, and we are told she often asked questions that startled her teacher by the depth of thought they expressed. All who knew her affirm that while she was high-spirited, quick to resent an injury, especially to her playmates or a cruelty to a dumb creature, she was gentle, respectful to her elders, affectionate and most helpful to all who seemed to need her services. One can readily imagine that her opportunities for development in the small southern town in the early sixties were meagre enough. She, however, learned almost automatically not only the "knowledge learned in school" but a lover of the woods and fields, she was prone to wander far, far away into the depths of the forest and "list to Natures's teaching." Observant, resourceful, likely to think things through she came to New York with her mother and sister about 1873, wise beyond her years, a tall, lank, straight haired girl, with large, soulful eyes that hinted of the high-strung romantic nature of the girl.
