The Anton Bruckner Home Page
This page is only just beginning construction. For some reason Anton Bruckner still appears to be a controversial composer. Although his close contemporaries, such as Gustav Mahler, are now generally accepted as the great composers they were, Bruckner's name still evokes mixed reactions. More than perhaps any other composer you either love or hate Bruckner's music - and there seems to be less information available on the net about Bruckner than about many other, lesser composers. Of course, all those different versions don't help. Confused? Who wouldn't be. But help is at hand in the shape of David Griegel's summary description of this minefield. Having read which, you'll probably be interested in the Bruckner Discography the result of an Internet-wide collaborative effort, which classifies recordings by which version they employ.

Bruckner, Anton (1824 - 1896)
Bruckner, born near Linz in 1824, is known chiefly as a symphonist. He was trained as a school-teacher and organist, and served in the second capacity in Linz until moving in 1868 to Vienna to teach harmony, counterpoint and organ at the Vienna Conservatory. His success as a composer was varied in his life-time, his acceptance hampered by his own diffidence and his scores posing editorial problems because of his readiness to revise what he had written. He was nine years the senior of Brahms, who outlived him by six months. Bruckner continued Austro-German symphonic traditions on a massive scale, his techniques of composition influenced to some extent by his skill as an organist and consequently in formal improvisation. Orchestral Music Bruckner completed nine numbered symphonies, ten, including the so-called Symphony No. 0, Die Nullte. The best known is probably Symphony No. 7, first performed in Leipzig in 1884, a work that includes in its scoring four Wagner tubas , instruments that were a newly developed cross between French horn and tuba. Symphony No. 4, "Romantic", has an added programme, a diffident afterthought. All the symphonies, however, form an important element in late 19th century symphonic repertoire. Recommended Recording Symphony No. 4 "Romantic

Anton Joseph Bruckner (1824-1896)
Unlike most great masters, Anton Bruckner developed his skills slowly. Indeed, had his life been as brief as Mozart's, Bruckner would be an obscure composer with a total of six relatively immature compositions to his credit (four Masses and two Requiems). Though born to peasants, Bruckner came to music early in life. His mother and father were both involved in local music activities in Ansfelden, near Linz, in Upper Austria. Bruckner received lessons in the violin from his father at the age of four, and took his first formal schooling in music theory at the age of eleven. During this time he became acquainted with Mozart's mass and Haydn's oratorios. There is some indication that his first attempts at composition date from this period, but none of these pieces survive. At the age of 13 Bruckner was compelled to forego further formal studies in music and composition by the death of his father and the subsequent financial problems of his family. Accordingly, he gained a position as a chorister in the local monastery where he continued to teach himself theory and had his first exposure to organ composition. In 1840, when his voice broke, he demonstrated his lack of self-confidence by deciding to follow his father's example and become a teacher rather than pursue composition as a vocation. In order to complete his courses in teacher training, he was required to travel to nearby Linz where he encountered the concert music of Weber and Beethoven. The following year he took his first post as a schoolmaster in the little village of Windhaag.

A JOURNAL OF MODERN MUSICAL PROGRESS
Published by the Bruckner Society of America, Inc.
in January, 1940 (Vol. 2, No.1) [The pagination of the original publication has been kept intact for those wishing to cite this article.] Like Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner springs from a line of Austrian schoolmasters. In the pleasantly situated village of Ansfelden, not far from the town of Linz, Bruckner's grandfather Joseph and his father Anton had both devoted their lives to the drab duties of rustic pedagogy, at that time still considered a hereditary occupation among provincials. Hence the arrival on earth of Anton himself on September 4 1824, meant in the normal course of things merely a fresh candidate for the abundant miseries of schoolmastership. As early as his fourth year the tiny "Tonerl," like Haydn a century before him, showed his undeniable musical bent, for even then he could bring forth intelligible music from a little fiddle and (to quote an old Ansfelder's naive characterization of these first signs of composer's fancy) "could often be heard humming or whistling unknown tunes." With the dawn of schooling the child showed a hearty dislike for all classroom activities, except the "Singstunde," an hour which seemed for him filled with irresistible enchantment. Of course, he received many a whipping for his backwardness in all extra-musical studies.

"If I knew one tenth of what he knows, I would be happy!" As you see, this is a home page designed for the immortal Bruckner and for all the people who love him. You might know Bach, Beethoven and Mozart well, but you might not be familiar with this name—Anton Bruckner. If that is the case, you must be very lucky because you’ve got a chance to enter the world of this great master. For me, Bruckner is not only a musician, but also a nice friend and an amiable teacher. Believe it or not, through his music, I learned how to respect my family and friends; I learned how to pursue my goals with faith and efforts; and I also learned how to recognize the existence of God. I can find all the answers in his music. Now I would like to share this information with you. Please grasp the chance and listen to the music of Bruckner. I promise that you will find a new continent in your deep heart.

Biography
Anton Bruckner
Composer Austria Born 9 Apr 1824
Died 11 Oct 1896
A shy and nervous bachelor whose musical career did not really start in earnest until he was into his 40s, Anton Bruckner is best remembered for his nine monumental symphonies. Imposing and inspiring works, their size and stature has led to them being called cathedrals in music. He was an organist, and some say this shows in the majestic sounds of his symphonies.
Joseph Anton Bruckner was born in Ansfelden in Upper Austria. He was the eldest of five brothers and sisters. It was a rural background of farming and innkeeping, though his father was a local schoolmaster. The family lived in the teachers' apartment of the schoolhouse on the east side of the church. After childhood study with the schoolmaster and organist of a nearby village, the boy Bruckner came back home to relieve his ill father, and one of the duties he helped with was organising the music in the local church.
After his father died Bruckner off to study to be a schoolteacher, studying music on the side. He would play the organ in local services, though his improvisations did not go down too well with some congregations.
