This list contains all recordings of Bruckner symphonies made before 1960, partial or complete, known to me to the present date, regardless of their publication history. It is hopefully not complete and will be updated as I hear of new items. Uncertainties about date or attribution are mentioned when known. The symphony in D minor from 1869, usually referred to as "Die Nullte" or "no. 0", is simply called the symphony in D minor.
Accurate information on the various versions of Bruckner's symphonies is available on David Griegel's website

He was appointed organist at the Linz cathedral in 1856 before becoming court organist in Vienna in 1868, where he later taught at the conservatory and university. He established a reputation as a virtuoso organist on trips to France in 1869 and to England in 1871, but as a composer he gained recognition slowly. Although he was influenced by the chromatic harmony and orchestral grandeur of Wagner's music, his work is marked by contrapuntal complexity and extended melodies, in the formal tradition of Beethoven and Schubert. His outstanding works are the Masses in D Minor (1864), in E Minor (1869), and F Minor (1872); a Te Deum (1886); and nine symphonies, of which the Fourth or

Bruckner, Anton (1824-1896)
Introduction
Bruckner can be either beautiful or boring. If a performance is tedious, it can be excruciating to sit through. However, if a performance is properly balanced and executed, it the music can be sublime. It can transport you to a heavenly place, temporarily. The recordings below are of the more positive variety. You may purchase them unreservedly, that is, if you can find them.
Symphonies
Symphony No. 3, 'Wagner': Harnoncourt brings the same kind of freshness to Bruckner that he did to Beethoven. This a wonderful performance, and certain moments really shine.
Symphony No. 4, 'Romantic': As in the Third symphony, Harnoncourt breathes spontaneity into this symphony, with a rather famous Scherzo (third movement).

In preparing this website, I was rather upset to find out that this recording has gone out of print. These things often seem to go in cycles, so there may be a chance that this disc will return to circulation at some point. But I wouldn't hold my breath. If you see this disc somewhere, snag a copy immediately. Giulini is a conductor who brings great breadth to any work he conducts. This doesn't always work (and this isn't always the case), but with Bruckner's symphonies it does wonders. And with this symphony in particular, the results are breathtaking. Though Giulini's creates an expansive, well-shaped sound, he's keep very powerful rhythms in the foreground. Oftentimes, it is due to this rhythmic style that one doesn't even notice how slow he may be conducting a piece. In this work he doesn't go any slower than anyone else, for the most part. (Karajan, by contrast, is not quite as pointed in his rhythms.) I bought this recording on a whim, and by the fourth minute into the recording, it had already replaced Walter's classic recording as my favourite! Bruckner died before he could finish this symphony, hence there is no finale. However, it doesn't really suffer from the lack of a fourth movement, and the result is a very solemn and powerful listening experience.

Preface: Bruckner and Wagner
Comparison is often made of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) . Is Bruckner "Wagnerian"? Here are some of my observations: The "meaning" of Bruckner's music lies in the symphonic form of purely instrumental music. Bruckner's language is the magnificent and glorious sound of brass, timpani and the songs of the birds expressed so serenely and sadly by the tone of the winds. The musical note itself speaks the language of depth. However, one of the most significant "meanings" of Wagner's music is its narrative(i.e. story drama) and symbols(e.g. leitmotifs) of myth(e.g. Der Ring Des Niebelungen often called Ring). Musical leitmotifs connects the musical theme with symbolic concepts, characters and objects(e.g. love, Brunnhilde, gold).

BRUCKNER, ANTON
BRUCKMANN, FRANZ ERNST (1697—1753), German mineralogist, was born on the 27th of September 1697 at Marienthal near Helmstädt. having qualified as a medical man in 172I, he practised at Brunswick and afterwards at Wolfenbtittel. His leisure time was given up to natural history, and especially to mineralogy and botany. He appears to have been the first to introduce the term oohithus to rocks that resemble in structure the roe of a fish; whence the terms oolite and oolitic. He died at Wolfenbüttel on the 21st of March 1753. He published Magnahia Del in locis subterraneis (Brunswick, 1727), Historia naturahis curl osa lapidis (1727), and Thesaurus subterraneus Ducalus Brunsvigii (1728). sincerity. (D. F. T.) 1 This date is given in Grove (new ed), but the style of the work is far earlier than that of the 7th symphony (1884) which quotes’ it in the slow movement.

Anton Bruckner
