Gavin Bryars
GAVIN BRYARS is one of Britain's leading composers. He was born in Yorkshire in 1943. His first musical reputation was as a jazz bassist working in the mid-sixties with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. He also worked closely with composers such as Cornelius Cardew, as well as founding The Portsmouth Sinfonia, which acquired a cult status for its performances and recordings of the classical repertoire with minimal music skills.
His first major work as a composer was The Sinking of the Titanic (1969) which was originally released along with Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet on Brian Eno's Obscure Label, and re-recorded for release in 1996 on Crepuscule Records. Over the last decade his compositions have ranged widely: they include the opera Medea produced by Robert Wilson at the Opera de Lyon and Paris Opera in l984; String Quartet No 1 for 'I'he Arditti Quartet, released on ECM Records in l985; By The Vaar for jazz bassist Charlie Haden in 1987; Pico's Flight recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1988; a series of vocal works for The Hilliard Ensemble including Glorious Hill (1988), Incipit Vita Nova (l989) and Cadman Requiem (l989); and Invention of Tradition, a mixed media piece conceived with artists Bruce MacLean and David Ward for the opening of the Tate Gallery in Liverpool in l988.
Bryars´ works have been used by such choreographers as Lucinda Childs, Maguy Marin and in 1989 by William Forsythe in Act I (and later Act III) of "

Gavin Bryars
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Richard Gavin Bryars (born ) is an English composer and double bass player. Born in Goole in Yorkshire , Bryars initially studied philosophy at Sheffield University before studying music for three years. The first musical work for which is he remembered was his role as bassist in the trio Joseph Holbrooke , alongside Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley . The trio began by playing relatively traditional jazz before moving into free improvisation . However, Bryars became dissatified with this when he saw a young bassist play in a manner which seemed to him to be artificial, and he became interested in composition instead. Bryars' first works as a composer owe much to the so-called New York School of John Cage (with whom he briefly studied)

17. Greg Sandow -- Gavin Bryars
Gavin Bryars writes a piece that with great detached melancholy teaches ushow to cheat at cards. Why isn't this remarkable composer better known?
http://www.gregsandow.com/bryars.htm
We know we’re hearing a CD of contemporary classical music, so we surely don’t expect the speaking voice, self-contained and just a little sad, addressing us in English with a European accent. "Good evening," it says. "Welcome once again to a man in a room gambling."
"This evening," the voice continues over a single line of music, ‘we will teach you one of the best things that can be done at a gambling table." The music, calm and uninvolved, played in the luminous middle register of a cello, fills the space around the speaker, adding its own loneliness, but otherwise making no comment. This is "A Man in a Room Gambling," a work by the British composer Gavin Bryars (released earlier this year on Philip Glass’s Point Music label) in which we learn how to cheat at cards. We begin by learning how to deal from the bottom of the pack. Our teacher is the Spanish sculptor Juan Muñoz, who also wrote the texts and who worked with Mr. Bryars on 10 of these pieces, each just five minutes long and designed for radio broadcast whenever a station needs to fill some extra time. "Knowing two or three cards at the bottom of the pack is a big advantage for the expert gambler," Mr. Muñoz tells us. It’s important, then, to notice which cards remain on the table after a hand has been played, and, when you’re dealing, to pick a few to stash at the bottom.

Gavin Bryars
Listening to a Gavin Bryars's work is traveling and curiously the pleasure you get from it is like the pleasure of first reading Jules Verne , Dumas or Borgès. Slow narration suffused with litterature and painting (one understands his attachment for Erik Satie or John Cage), Gavin Bryars's works are not music for music's sake but a pictorial journey along the channels of memory and imagination. Here are neither chords nor harmonic relations but settings, landscapes, densities where sonorities flow along the Ariadne's thread woven by the composer to express the continuity and fluidity of thought. A modern musician born of jazz, Gavin Bryars has always been interested in saxophone. This instrument - wich has gained a unique place in the jazz world - has always been injustly disregarded by classical music. Listening to the three jewels, Allegrasco, Alaric I or II and Three Elegies , one can but regret this void and hope that saxophone will take its due place in the contemporary repertoire at last. Wich instrument could have this lyrical intensity and this mysterious hue in Allegrasco ? Wich instruments - better than this full-strength saxophone family (from contrabasso to sopranino) - could make us float in the astonishing sonorous hazes of Three Elegies On this CD - wich is a true ode to the saxophone by the only contemporary poet of slowness - Gavin Bryars delivers a forthcoming pacified music in wich the passions of gone-by centuries have given place to contemplation. Put this record on your Hifi stereo, close your eyes and trice sails up your Earth vessel for an endless journey in an expanding universe; in your seaway, some note dust - memories of stars cruising towards eternity.
