Gavin Bryars' idea of north
Canadian connections for a British composer
BY JASON ANDERSON
The uncoolness of the CBC can occasionally be subverted. In this case, it's not by some pseudo-hip Newsworld borefest, but by the radio network's commitment to new music. It's something that makes one of the planet's most successful composers, Yorkshire native Gavin Bryars, more than happy to get on a plane to Manitoba. Bryars first gained renown as a jazz bassist, but by the end of the '60s he was involved with projects like the Portsmouth Sinfonia, a notorious ensemble of musicians playing instruments they weren't used to, and composing works like The Sinking of the Titanic , which suggests what the ship's musicians would sound like if they had continued playing underwater. The debut production of Bryars' latest opera, Doctor Ox's Experiment , was directed by Atom Egoyan, and his connections to Canada are many and varied. Talking by phone from England before making his third visit to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival, Bryars agrees that public radio support has contributed to a healthier climate for new music here than in the U.S. Moreover, Canadians may be naturally sympathetic to his music. "In all honesty," he says, "there's a different kind of temperament with Canadians. Maybe they're closer to the more reflective kind of music that I write."

Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet oppure The Sinking of the Titanic del 1969). E la rielaborazione diventa una costante di Bryars anche su brani già scritti da lui e pubblicati.

Nexus Performance Part of New Gavin Bryars Compilation A new compilation of Gavin Bryars' music has been released by Point Music and includes music performed by Nexus. Gavin Bryars wrote "One Last Bar, Then Joe Can Sing" for Nexus and Nexus' recording of the work has been released on a Point Music CD compilation that includes Bryars' Cello Concerto (Farewell to Philosophy) with Julian Loyd Webber as soloist and a number of other works by the composer. "One Last Bar, Then Joe Can Sing" was for a time a regular feature of Nexus programs and their performance of it was a major part of the Royal Philharmonic Hall concert of "The International Percussion Event" in Stockholm, Sweden organized by the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble in October of 1998. Nexus also performed the work during their first visit to Sao Paolo, Brazil. It is scored for two marimbas, xylophone, vibraphone, crotales, song bells and miscellaneous small percussion instruments and is 19 minutes in duration. Bryars' composition history and it's influences, the Point Music compilation and another on the Philips label are discussed by music critic Paul Griffiths in his New York Times review of Monday, January 25, 2003. "One Last Bar, Then Joe Can Sing" is on the CD, "Farewell to Philosophy" which contains Bryars' Cello Concerto and Bass Concerto "By the Vaar" with soloist Charlie Haden. It can be purchased via e-mail from the Nexus web site.

Gavin Bryars Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet
(Point, 1993) Listening to things over and over again can alter consciousness for short periods of time. Remember your mother telling you to straighten up your room? Well, when mom's not around, use this. It's 74 minutes and 43 seconds of a London street tramp singing the hymn "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet," with various gradual embellishments by Bryars, including the addition of Tom Waits at the end. Sometimes I leave it playing all day. Order This CD

Gavin Bryars was born in Yorkshire, Great Britain in 1943. His first musical reputation was as a jazz bassist working in the early sixties with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. He abandoned improvisation in 1966 and worked for a time in the United States with John Cage. Subsequently he collaborated closely with composers such as Cornelius Cardew and John White. From 1969 to 1978 he taught in departments of Fine Art in Portsmouth and Leicester, and during his time at Portsmouth College of Art, he was instrumental in founding the legendary Portsmouth Sinfonia. His first major work as a composer was The Sinking of the Titanic (1969) originally released on Brian Eno's Obscure label in 1975 and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (1971), both famously released in new versions in the 1990s on Point Music label, selling over a quarter of a million copies. The original 1970s recordings have recently been re-released on CD by Virgin Records. Among Gavin Bryars' other works are three string quartets, a series of vocal works for The Hilliard Ensemble including Glorious Hill (1988), Incipit Vita Nova (1989), Cadman Requiem (1989, revised 1998), and The First Book of Madrigals (1998-2000); works for the opening of the Tate Gallery in Liverpool (1988); Chateau d'Oiron, Poitiers French Ministry of Culture Commission (1993) the Tate Gallery St Ives (1997). Other works include commissions for Charlie Haden (1987), John Harle (1991), Nexus (1994), Lawrence Cherney (1994), Fretwork (1995), Maggie Cole (1995), Julian Lloyd Webber (1995), Valdine Anderson (1995/6) Holly Cole (1998), Orlando Consort (2000). Orchestral commissions include Bournemouth Sinfonietta (The Green Ray, 1991), BBC Symphony Orchestra (The War in Heaven, 1993), Primavera Chamber Orchestra (The Porazzi Fragment, 1999). Future commissions include a concerto for violin and string orchestra for Primavera, a percussion concert for Nexus with orchestra and a marimba concerto for Pedro Carneiro and London Sinfonietta to be premiered as part of the inauguration season of Oporto's new concert hall designed by Rem Koolhaas for the city's Cultural Capital of Europe celebration in 2002.

Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet [Point Music 1993, 438 823-2]
This haunting serialist work is based on a religious song performed by a tramp, accidentally caught on a film soundtrack, rediscovered by Bryars, and subsequently orchestrated. The first version was one side of an LP on Eno's Obscure Records (1975). The extended rendering found on the Point CD starts with the solo vocal, adds a chamber ensemble, and eventually a full orchestra with choir. It is extremely emotive and touching, qualities lost when Tom Waits' voice (bathetic faux tramp) enters in the fifth movement. I also recommend: Vita Nova [ECM New Series 1994, ECM 1533]
Four chamber pieces in a contemplative vein featuring, among other artists, the Hilliard Ensemble. The Sinking of the Titanic [Les Disques Du Crepuscule 1990, TWI 922-2]
Full-length CD version of a piece again originally released on Obscure Records. This is a totally new recording perhaps also different from the more recent American issue on Point (confirmation?). Based on themes from the hymn "Autumn" and performed by a chamber group in an early 19th-century disused water tower, this intense performance sounds scarily like the musicians are going down with the ship. Long reverb times make this a fitting companion to the Deep Listening Band's recordings. copyleft (c) 2001

    AGAVA Software Projects> Bryars, Gavin
Born: Jan 16, 1943 in Goole, England Genres: Avntg Styles: England, Experimental, Minimalism Instruments: Composer, Cello, Percussion Arguably the most important British post-minimalist composer, Gavin Bryars mixes classical, jazz, and modern influences in his intellectually engaging (yet still emotionally touching) music. Though his style has changed somewhat since his first major piece, 1969's "The Sinking of the Titanic," Bryars has remained a provocative yet accessible composer capable of working in a variety of settings. Born in the small Yorkshire village of Goole, England, in 1943, Bryars' first musical love was jazz. Beginning in 1963, when he was a philosophy student at the University of Sheffield, Bryars played bass with free jazz guitarist Derek Bailey and drummer Tony Oxley in the nonsensically named improvisatory trio Joseph Holbrooke. (An 11-minute excerpt from a 1965 Joseph Holbrooke rehearsal was released on CD in 1999, but the group remains otherwise undocumented.) Joseph Holbrooke broke up in 1966 when Bailey and Oxley moved to London to form the Spontaneous Music Ensemble, and at that point, Bryars abandoned improvisatory music. After a period spent studying in the United States under John Cage , whose theories inspired much of Bryars' early work, Bryars returned to England and became a Fine Arts instructor at Portsmouth College of Art in 1969. While studying with renowned composers Cornelius Cardew and John White, Bryars wrote the original sketch of "The Sinking of the Titanic" to accompany a student art exhibition. Bryars originally thought of the piece as a musical equivalent of conceptual art and did not originally intend for the piece to be performed. It wasn't until 1972 that Bryars wrote the first performance score for the piece, and he revised the piece in 1975, 1990, and 1994.
