Name William Byrd Place of Birth Virginia Born Died Westover and Colonel William Byrd II
"The broad lawn that rolls down to the waters edge at Westover is shaded by huge trees - the yew planted by George Washington, the elms and sycamores, and the line of tulip poplars. They stand there before this great Georgian mansion which has withstood all the ravages caused by fire and wars ever since William Byrd II built it beside the James river 260 years ago".
Family Tree
Pennsylvania had William Penn and Virginia had the great William Byrd. Colonel William Byrd II (1674-1744), to give him his full title, was born on his father's plantation in Virginia but brought up in Essex and remained in England for most of his early life. Aged thirty when his father died in 1704, William returned to Virginia to manage the family's 26,000 acre estate and later built a fine house there which stands today. He became President of the Colonial Council, on which he sat as a Member for 35 years, and in 1733 established two towns, Richmond on the James river - now the capital - and Petersburg on the Appomattuck. He was truly one of the founding fathers of the modern State of Virginia whose southern boundary he personally established. Colonel William Byrd II William was hardy and energetic and, like most Virginians of his time, often in the saddle. A great traveller, he was no ordinary pioneer: this was a man of culture, wide accomplishments and considerable charm, a genial host who had powerful friends on both sides of the Atlantic. He crossed that ocean ten times and "Golden Rose", the ship in which he often sailed, is in the background to Hans Hyssing's portrait of him.

Little is known of Byrd's life apart from various lawsuits over property and the fact of his Roman Catholicism, from the consequences of which he seems to have been protected at a time of anti-Papism by his fame as a composer and by friends in high places. In his motets and masses, Byrd showed himself the equal of his Fr. and It. contemporaries as a contrapuntist. He was an innovator in form and technique in his liturgical works, the finest of which is the Great Service. His madrigals are also of exceptional quality, and there is superb mus. in his solo songs and songs for the stage. In his

Byrd, William ( b ?Lincoln, 1543 - d Stondon Massey, 4 July, 1623)
Byrd was brought up in London as a pupil of Thomas Tallis. In 1563 he became Organist and Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral, and married there in 1568. Although he remained at Lincoln until c1572, he was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal from 1570, and its organist form 1575 (at first with Tallis).
In London he rapidly established himself as a composer gaining influential friends and patrons, and earning favour with Queen Elizabeth who granted him and Tallis a patent in 1575 for the printing and marketing of part music and manuscript paper.
Following his wife's death in 1580 he remarried. He and his family were often cited as Catholic recusants, but he continued to compose openly for the Catholic church. In 1593 Byrd moved to Essex where he spent the rest of his life and was frequently involved in property litigation. His reputation was very high: he was described as 'Father of British Music', Morley and Tomkins were among his pupils.
Much of his varied output was published during his lifetime. His sacred music ranges widely in style and mood, from the florid and penitential motets of the Cantiones sacrae to the concise and devotional motets of the Gradualia (motet sections intended to form an impressive scheme of complete Mass Propers). His secular songs predate the true madrigal as they use intricate flowing counterpoint derived from an earlier English style (cf Tallis and Taverner), and range from solemn lamentations to exuberant jests. His instrumental music is especially important as the many consort songs greatly influenced the later lute ayre, which his virginal pieces and unparalleled in richness of invention and contrapuntal brilliance. In all the genres in which he wrote, Byrd was both traditionalist, and innovator, channelling continental ideas into a native English tradition, and his expressive range was unusually wide for his day. He wrote for both Catholic and Anglican churches with equal genius.

BYRD, WILLIAM (1828-1898). William Byrd, lawyer, soldier, and politician, was born at Cottage Farm, Clarke County, Virginia, on September 9, 1828, the son of Richard Evelyn and Anne (Harrison) Byrd. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute on July 4, 1849, and afterward took a degree in law at the University of Virginia. By March 1853 he was practicing law in the Travis County, Texas, community of Webberville, and by 1854 was popular enough to be chosen orator at the annual Fourth of July barbecue. The Austin Texas State Gazette see austin state gazette ) referred to him as "a young lawyer spoken of highly by his friends," and declared his address "to have been quite eloquent and credible to that young gentleman." A clipping from an unidentified newspaper in Byrd's scrapbook, now preserved at the Barker Texas History Center qv at the University of Texas at Austin, quotes the 1854 speech in full. Its spread-eagle oratory praises the creed of the Young America movement and attacks the North for "tramping on the constitution" and for "substituting for the wisdom and virtue of their patriotic fathers, the fatuity and villainy of unprincipled fanatics deliberately [inaugurating] a series of legislative acts against slavery." In August 1854 Byrd moved to Austin, where he formed a partnership with T. Scott Anderson.

Byrd, William, 1543-1623 1543-1623, English composer, organist at Lincoln Cathedral and, jointly with Tallis, at the Chapel Royal. Although Roman Catholic, he composed anthems and services for the English Church in addition to his great Roman masses and Latin motets. He was esteemed by his contemporaries and was favored by Queen Elizabeth I, who, in 1575, granted to Byrd and Tallis a patent for the exclusive printing and selling of music. Byrd also composed instrumental music. See studies by E. H. Fellowes (2d ed. 1948), O. W. Neighbor (1978), and J. Kerman (1981).

Byrd, William, 1674-1744 1674-1744, American colonial writer, planter, and government official; son of William Byrd (1652-1704). After being educated in England, he became active in the politics of colonial America. He served as member of the House of Burgesses, as receiver-general of Virginia, as Virginia council member, and as colonial agent in England. Byrd inherited a great estate from his father and ultimately owned over 179,000 acres (72,000 hectares). In 1737 he had the city that was to be Richmond laid out on one of his estates. His service in 1728 as one of the commissioners to survey the North Carolina-Virginia boundary and his many trips into the backwoods provided the material for much of his writings; A History of the Dividing Line, A Journey to the Land of Eden, and A Progress to the Mines were all based on his diaries. Byrd's polished style and crisp wit, in addition to his valuable record of Southern life, have won him a reputation as one of the foremost colonial authors. At his death he left a library of some 4,000 volumes at his Westover estate. See his diaries and other writings (1941, 1942, 1970); biography by Pierre Marambaud (1971).

    William Byrd in Two Worlds
    Volume I, Chapter 4
SUMMARY This essay explores the American identity in the colonial period. In William ByrdÕs story we see a man torn between his attachments to England and to America. In the eighteenth century the two identities could pull the settlers in seemingly opposite directions. ByrdÕs life introduces us to several important facets of colonial life, including politics, trade, and society. And it reminds us of AmericaÕs continuing political and psychological link to the "mother country.
FROM THE TEXT The sun went down behind the steep, forested ridge of the Alleghenies. Resplendent stars shone brightly in the clear autumn sky while bear, deer, and opossum foraged among the darkened trees. In the midst of a vast and potent wilderness there glowed a solitary campfire, a flickering circle of light illuminating tents, horses, and a cluster of men. The men standing by the campfire were working their way through swamps and brush surveying a dividing line between the colonies of Virginia and North Carolina. Their supplies had long since run low, and most of their horses were lame. Nonetheless, their camp was festive: this was October 30, 1728, the king's birthday, and patriotism led them to consume spirits and discharge fireworks in celebration. The men were doing their best, toasting King George II with the last of their liquor, a bottle of cherry brandy carefully preserved by their leader, William Byrd, and drinking to the queen and all her royal progeny with drafts of pure water from an Allegheny tributary. To complete the celebration, they set off explosives, fashioned of green cane from a nearby field and laid in the fire. The air within the cane joints expanded and punctured the night air with loud and satisfying bangs.
