[silence] Cornelius Cardew - an anniversary
From: Virginia Anderson ( assembly1@waitrose.com
Date: Fri Dec 14 2001 - 06:47:05 PST Hello all,
As my major interest is British experimental music, today marks the
anniversary of an important event. Twenty years ago last evening, the
British composer Cornelius Cardew was killed by a hit-and-run driver while
he was walking in deep snow to his home in Leyton, East London. Cardew
could roughly (but with some justification) be called the "Cage" of Britain,
in that he developed a particularly British philosophy of notation and
indeterminacy which was wholly new. I thought that a way to memorialise
this anniversary was to provide a basic source guide to Cardew's music and writings (thus easily copied for future reference) at the Experimental Music http://www.experimentalmusic.co.uk are extremely busy at this time, here's a direct link to the page itself: http://www.users.waitrose.com/~chobbs/cardew.html

Fri, 15 Mar 2002 12:10:35 -0500 By what accounts and why? depends upon who you talk to. i don't know the official words written on the toe-tag, but have heard accounts among (knowing and questionable) composerly sources that it was not an accident. my first source was gilius van bergeijk, composer and teacher of electronic music at the royal conservatory of music in the hague. he is both knowing and questionable at once. cardew was politically active, and his music (and approach) reflected his politics. the specifics of this are to be found in available texts, and probably in british music magazines of the era that can be found in most music libraries. also... ************************************************ http://www.composer.co.uk/cardew/ http://www.vex.net/ps

For Cornelius Alvin Curran
For Cornelius was written in December 1981 just after my hearing the news of the accidental and tragic death of the English composer Cornelius Cardew. Cornelius was a visionary and his humane, prophetic powers affected everyone around him. Since my first meeting with him in Rome in 1965 and later through the many collaborations of MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) and Cardew’s AMM group, his subtle influence has remained with me. For Cornelius is structured simply in three sections—a song, a thundering study on slowly changing harmonies, and a chorale. Though not intentionally made so, this piece may be seen as a tribute to Cardew’s own utopian dreams of making “elitist” music popular."

The EMC Piano Catalogue
PF0013. Michael Parsons. Piano Music 1971-74.
New to the EMC, many these classic piano works have been published in other collections - but (with the exception of Forward Music's Experimental Album ) are now sadly out of print. This collection forms a nice selction of Parsons' piano works of the time, ranging from classic minimalism to the haunting Arctic Rag . This includes useful performance notes on all pieces by the composer.
PF0005. Christopher Hobbs. 24 Preludes for Piano.
A set of preludes in all the major and minor keys, this is one of the most popular of Hobbs' recent piano works. Like Alkan, Chopin, Bach, Hindemith, Shostakovitch and others, this is a formal set of preludes; unlike them, influences range from Christmas carols to Little Eva as well as the usual piano-composer suspects.
PF0010. Christopher Hobbs. L'Auteur se Retire.
This is a fun 1990s concern Chris Hobbs had, and one never knows when this will crop up again. Like Bach and Shostakovitch, Hobbs worked with musical notes which appear in a composer's name; unlike these composers, Hobbs took existing works by various composers (Cage, Satie, many others) and took their names out, thus the title: "The Author Retires." What's left is surprising and fun to play - a real late florescence of Hobbs/Duchampian "found" composition.
PF0017. Christopher Hobbs.

Harry Partch and Cornelius Cardew - Two Outsiders
As in most other fields, music has its mavericks. These are often people who simply don't seem to 'fit in' with the 'mainstream', either because of what they believe or the way they do things or the way they want to do things. In history it's often quite difficult to know really whether someone was an 'outsider' or not, simply because history tends to be (re-)written in accordance with a particular person's influence, usually on people who have no personal knowledge of that individual. So, most personal information concerning Beethoven would suggest that he was very much an 'outsider', at least in terms of the rest of humanity. It's equally clear that from today's perspective he is one of the most influential musicians in western music. Those who are considered 'mavericks' today, then, are not necessarily doomed to be considered mavericks by the future. Of course, they may well be, or, of course, they may be simply forgotten. They're interesting, however, because they tend to push boundaries and offer interesting and unique viewpoints. This is true of the two composers we are going to investigate here.
