Biografía:
Compositor francés. Fue discípulo de Jules Massenet en el Conservatorio de París; también Richard Wagner influyó notablemente en él. En 1887 ganó el Prix de Rome, que le permitió vivir en la capital italiana durante tres años, donde compuso dos obras orquestales de grandes dimensiones. No obstante, su fama se centra en la ópera Louise (1900), que comenzó a componer en Roma. En 1902 utilizó las ganancias obtenidas por el éxito de su ópera para fundar el Conservatoire Populaire, donde se daban clases gratuitas de danza y música a mujeres procedentes de las clases trabajadoras. Charpentier compuso una segunda ópera, Julien (1913), así como obras orquestales y vocales, aunque ninguna de sus obras alcanzó la popularidad de Louise, con su heroína de la clase trabajadora. © eMe
