Mit siebzehn als Schüler Massenet s gewann er den Prix de Rome. Erste Erfolge errang er mit der Orchester suite d'Italie" (1892) und Vertonungen von Gedichten Baudelaires und Verlaines Mit seiner ersten Oper, „Louise", (darin die berühmte Arie „Depuis le jour") wurde er über Nacht einer der meist gefeierten Bühnen komponisten.     b Dieuze, near Nancy, 25 June 1860
    d Paris, 18 February 1956, aged ninety-five
    His father was a baker. At the age of fifteen he began work in a spinning mill, where he taught violin to his employer - who was so impressed with Charpentier's talent that he sponsored his entry into the Lille Conservatory. In 1881 he went to the Paris Conservatory, studying with Massenet from 1885 and winning the Prix de Rome in 1887. In 1902 he founded the Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson, to give working girls greater opportunities to enjoy and perform music. He succeeded Massenet as a member of the Academie des Beaux Arts in 1912. After World War II he became a recluse.     El pilar del realismo musical francés, nace en Dieuze (Moselle, Francia) el 25 de junio de en el seno de una humilde familia de panaderos que lo apoya desde un primer momento en sus estudios musicales, aunque su primera profesión será en una industria textil. En esta época se granjea la amistad de su patrón, ayudándole económicamente para que pueda estudiar en el Conservatorio de Lille
    En consigue una nueva beca gracias a la que se traslada a París e ingresa en el Conservatorio. Allí estudia violín con Lambert Massart , pero su actitud rebelde le ocasiona la expulsión del centro, siendo readmitido al poco tiempo, incorporándose a la clase de armonía de Emile Pessard . Con todo, la mayor influencia la recibe Jules Massenet al tomar lecciones de composición del celebrado maestro en . La aportación de Massenet a la carrera musical de Charpentier será decisiva. Dos años después le otorgan el Premio de Roma de Composición por Didon
