Abstract:
We are interested in the study of disease emergence and re-emergence. Some of our recent work focuses on the search for mechanisms capable of explaining the recently observed rise in Tuberculosis around the world. We outline some of the results of this workusing continuous time models. TB research and our interest in disease emergenece and re-emergence leads naturally into the study of various theoretical questions including: what is the role of dispersal on disease dynamics? Discrete S-I-S nonlinear epidemic models are used to illustrate its role. A framework for the study of the role of disease-induced and disease-enhanced dispersal on disease persistence in populations with complex local dynamics is presented including some preliminary results. This work has been carried out jointly with Juan Aparicio, Angel Capurro, Zhilan Feng, Wenzhang Huang and Abdul-Aziz Yakubu.

Carlos Chavez (1899-1978), Mexico
Carlos Chavez was a renowned composer, conductor, educator, and administrator whose distinctive, often highly percussive music synthesized elements of Mexican, Indian, and Spanish-Mexican influence. A prolific writer of music, Chavez's works include five ballets, seven symphonies, four concertos, a cantata and opera, numerable pieces for voice, piano, and chamber ensembles. Chavez was trained primarily as a pianist and developed much of his compositional skills independent of teachers. Coming of age at the close of the Mexican revolution and during a time of renewed cultural nationalism, Chavez's investigation of indigenous Indian cultures, native folk elements, and dance forms brought an unprecedented vigor and visibility to twentieth-century Mexican music. Carlos Antonio de Padua Chavez y Ramiez was born on June 13, 1899, in Mexico City. Chavez's first lessons in music came from his older brother. His first formal music lessons came from Professor Asuncion Parra. Later, his principal teachers were the pianist Pedro Luis Ogazon from 1915-20 and composer Manuel M. Ponce from 1910-1914. His studies with Ponce were not as productive as with Ogazon. Chavez's preference toward indigenous Indian music influenced his aesthetic viewpoint. Much different from that of Chavez, Ponce's interest was in European rather than Indian music, and it was not until later in his life that he altered his view. This appreciation and love of towards the indigenous Indian music of Mexico began when he was about five or six years of age when his family would holiday in Tlaxcala. It would be augmented in later visits to Puebla, Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacan, Guanajuato and Oaxaca.

Born 13 June 1899 in Mexico City, Carlos Chávez was a renowned composer, conductor, and educator whose distinctive, often highly percussive music synthesized elements of Mexican, Indian, and Spanish-Mexican influence. A prolific writer of music and music criticism, Chávez's oeuvre includes five ballets, seven symphonies, four concertos, a cantata and opera, and innumerable pieces for voice, piano, and chamber ensemble; he wrote two books (of which Toward A New Music: Music and Electricity became a major contribution and fundamental document of new musical thought) and more than 200 articles on music. Chávez was trained primarily as a pianist and developed much of his compositional skills independent of instructors. Coming of age at the close of the Mexican revolution and during a time of renewed cultural nationalism, Chávez's investigation of indigenous Indian cultures, native folk elements, and dance forms brought an unprecedented vigor and visibility to 20th-century Mexican music. A master of orchestration, Chávez's use of native instruments was inimitable with polyrhythms, cross-rhythms, syncopation, and numerous irregular meters often significant elements of compositonal structure.
