As a painter living in China, I have used Western watercolour technique for more than 30 years. I have a great passion for painting ancient Chinese architecture. Living here in the soil of China under variable conditions I try to understand the history, the environment, the style, and the cultural background of this ancient architecture. I express this in the form of painting which shows this beauty. Some features of northern Chinese architecture are the use of special bricks, a large roof, red pillars, stone stairs and railings, which are to be seen in the forbidden city in Beijeng... the symmetrical layout of the architecture here is a particular feature. The summer palace situated in a suburb of Beijeng is the best preserved royal garden in China. The Beihai gardens is part of the imperial palace...

26. AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEN YI
AN INTERVIEW WITH chen yi. chen yi Up until the first half of the 20th century, there were only a very few professional women composers in China.
http://www.newmusicon.org/v9n4/v94chen_yi.htm
AN INTERVIEW WITH CHEN YI
Is there a noticeable difference in the number of women composers in China before and after 1949? In other words, does it appear that the dramatic and fundamental change in the government of China in 1949 made a difference in the opportunities for Chinese women to become composers? Yes, without a doubt, the political change created more opportunities for women. For one thing, the number of composition students has increased. Also, in the work place, as in other areas of life in China, both women and men are equal. These changes have made it more possible for women to become composers. How, if at all, did this political reality affect your decision to prepare yourself for a career in composition at the Central Conservatory and when did you make that decision? The door of opportunity opened for those of my generation when the system of higher education in China resumed after the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977) ended. In 1978, I was in the first group of composition students to be admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Actually, I was also admitted as a violin major, though I was only allowed to elect one major. I chose composition because it had been my dream. And since making that decision, I have taken composition seriously as my profession, though I must admit that it is still a mysterious realm for me to explore. Regarding that first group, I understand from an article published in the New York Times earlier this year that, when the Central Conservatory reopened its doors in 1977, "after the 10 barren years of the Cultural Revolution," it received applications from 18,000 musicians across China seeking to pursue professional music studies, and that, of those, only 200 were eventually accepted as the first group of conservatory students. How soon did your promise as a composer begin to show after being admitted to the Central Conservatory?

Long March Leaders Marshal Chen Yi Chen Yi was born in 1901 in Lochi near Chengdu, Sichuan, into a moderately wealthy magistrate's family. Chen Yi (pronounced Chun Ee) was left behind at the beginning of the Long March to direct military operations in the old Communist zone. Chen had been wounded six weeks earlier with a bullet in the hip that had not healed. He was a short stocky but a cultured man, outspoken, and outgoing. He an excellent poet, second only to Mao and was known for his sense of humor. He had few troops, 25,000 to 30,000 with about 10,000 of those wounded and of those, not more than 6,000 to 7,000 had ever held a rifle in their hands. The Nationalist forces constantly harassed them so that by December 1934, losses were so great that they were forced into guerrilla warfare. By then their numbers were down to 2,000 troops and 2000 wounded. On February 14, 1935, Chen called upon the peasants in the area to take the wounded soldiers into their homes as sons. "They will make good sons, marry your daughters and will be hard workers," said Chen Within a half day every wounded soldier had been placed with a peasant family, dispersed invisibly into the countryside. Each was supplied with several silver dollars, medicine for treating their wounds, and 5 pounds of salt (a priceless gift). On March 4, 1935, the remainder of Chen's forces, numbering about 1800 men marched out to join the rest of the Red Army. They were to travel for the next three years. They broke up into smaller groups. The KMT put out a reward of 50,000 yuan for the capture of Chen and his political commissar Xiang Ying. Chen and Xiang slipped through KMT lines in disguise. A few days later remnants of their forces joined them. They were down to groups of 80 men. There had been fearsome losses. Chen's hip had not healed and by June 1935, he couldn't walk. Chen tied himself to a tree so he would not shake with pain while he poured Tiger Balm medicine into the putrid wound on his thigh. The thigh soon improved. By December 1936, he made his way to Yan'an to Mao, never sleeping in the same place twice.

    39. Chen Yi (1953-),
chen yi. Dans ses compositions, chen yi combine avec subtilité
    http://www.stanford-fr.org/web/archive/8Momentum.html
