FOR TICKETS CALL CarnegieCharge aco homepage concert schedule Program notes for this concert Essay Paul Chihara went Hollywood (and Carnegie Hall, too) From Scene to Shining Screen: A Short History of Film Music by Paul Chihara Movie music was not born in the movie theaters but in the worlds of opera, musical theater, and vaudeville. Concert music too, particularly the romantic and melodramatic scores of the late nineteenth century, so popular in the early twentieth, provided a large and immediately available library of recognizable and memorable material suitable for film underscoring. Mendelssohn's Fingel's Cave Overture , Wagner's Ride of the Walkurie , Lizst's Les Preludes , Rossini's William Tell Overture , just to mention some very obvious examples of dramatic and descriptive music, were ideal for movie music. When D.W. Griffeth produced his silent Birth of a Nation (1915), he provided a large orchestral score stitched together from classical and popular sources.

Video games MUSIC Music reviews: Paul Chihara; Sarah Vaughan August 4, 2002 FROM THE VAULT Sarah Vaughan "The Complete Roulette Sarah Vaughan Studio Sessions" (Mosaic) SOUND CLIPS Sarah Vaughan "Have You Meet Miss" You need the RealAudio player to hear this clip. That Sarah Vaughan was one of the most gifted of all jazz singers is inarguable; that she was also one of the most pliable and changeable is equally beyond dispute. The contradiction that was called Sassy is in full flower on this eight-CD set that collects all 84 tracks, spread over 13 albums, that Vaughan recorded for Roulette, which, depending on which story you believe, was a legitimate label with some unsavory connections or a mob front. Vaughan was lured to the label in part because Count Basie had landed there. Her first album, called "Dreamy," was the '60s equivalent of Barry White. Sassy's seductive voice was just aural lubrication. "The Divine One" was a vast improvement, a Quincy Jones-arranged session that featured little-known tunes like "What Do You See in Her" and the early Cy Coleman composition "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life," which was gorgeously sung and nearly absent of the mannerisms she often relied on during this period. On the second disc, there's great joy to be heard in the Basie Band sessions released as "Count Basie/Sarah Vaughan" (though the Count himself sits out, especially on the scat solo on "Perdido"). And although the intimacy of the "After Hours" session (on the fourth disc) in 1961 seems contrived, Vaughan's reading of "Great Day" ranks with her best recordings on Mercury and Verve. She was able to find beauty in odd, unexpected places, such as the title song of the 1948 Humphrey Bogart-Lauren Bacall film "Key Largo" (not to be confused with the pop hit), which was sampled not long ago for an Acura ad and is one of her finest vocal performances in this box.

Received a D.M.A. from Cornell University in 1965 where he was a student of Robert Palmer . Also studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, Ernst Pepping in Berlin, and with Gunther Schuller at Tanglewood. With Toru Takemitsu , Chihara was composer-in-residence at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont in 1971. He is currently (as of 2002) on the faculty at UCLA and was also the first composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Neville Marriner , Conductor. His concert works have been performed in most major cities and arts centers in the U.S. and Europe. Commissions and awards include those from The Lili Boulanger Memorial Award, the Guggenheim Foundation , the Fulbright Fellowship, the Aaron Copland Fund , and National Endowment for the Arts , as well as from the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra , the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the New Japan Philharmonic , the Cleveland Orchestra , and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra . Composer-in-residence at the San Francisco Ballet from 1973-1986. Works composed for the San Francisco Ballet included Shin-ju (based on the "lovers' suicide" plays by the great Japanese dramatist Chikamatsu) and the first full-length American ballet, The Tempest.
