Introduction (born Zelazowa Wola, ?1 March 1810; died Paris, 17 October 1849). Liszt Schumann and introductions into the highest society, he quickly established himself as a private teacher and salon performer, his legendary artist's image being enhanced by frail health (he had tuberculosis), attractive looks, sensitive playing, a courteous manner and the piquancy attaching to self-exile. Of his several romantic affairs, the most talked about was that with the novelist George Sand (Aurore Dudevant) though whether he was truly drawn to women must remain in doubt. Between 1838 and 1847 their relationship, with a strong element of the maternal on her side, coincided with one of his most productive creative periods. He gave few public concerts, though his playing was much praised, and he published much of his best music simultaneously in Paris, London and Leipzig. The breach with Sand was followed by a rapid deterioration in his health and a long visit to Britain (1848). His funeral at the Madeleine was attended by nearly 3000 people. Chopin is admired above all for his great originality in exploiting the piano. While his own playing style was famous for its subtlety and restraint, its exquisite delicacy in contrast with the spectacular feats of pianism then reigning in Paris, most of his works have a simple texture of accompanied melody. From this he derived endless variety, using wide-compass broken chords, the sustaining pedal and a combination of highly expressive melodies, some in inner voices. Similarly, though most of his works are basically ternary in form, they show great resource in the way the return is varied, delayed, foreshortened or extended, often with a brilliant coda added.

Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849) Frederic Chopin was born in Poland of a Polish mother, and his country of origin clearly influenced Chopin to the extent that he wrote many Mazurkas and Polonaises based on Polish dances. The other country he is associated with is France, his father being French and Chopin moving to Paris and spending much of his creative life there. Although often contrasted with the extrovert virtuoso Liszt, the reserved Chopin nevertheless had a creatively important social life in Paris with a number of lady friends. His longest lasting relationship was with the female novelist known as George Sand who dressed as a man. This relationship was important to Chopin, with Sand perhaps acting as a mother figure, and they were together for about 10 years. Chopin was not particularly healthy and developed tuberculosis, which he endured for several years before his death at the age of 39. Chopin's music: Chopin was a skilled pianist, and a large proportion of his works are for solo piano. Many of these works are fairly short in duration, such as the Preludes, Etudes, Waltzes, Impromptus, Nocturnes and Scherzos, as well as the previously mentioned Polish dance forms of the Mazurka and Polonaise. Chopin also developed a form called the Ballade which is a more extended work, fairly free in style like a stream of consciousness, but with an internal logic. He also wrote a number of multi-movement works including of course several Piano Sonatas. He was quite capable of writing for other instruments and did so at times, his two Piano Concertos (for solo Piano and Orchestra) being obvious examples.

Frederic Chopin Born 1 March, 1810 in Zelazowa Wola, Poland Died 17 October, 1849 in Paris, France One of the most innovative pianists of the 19th century, Frederic Chopin changed the course of piano literature with his original harmonic ideas and adventurous pieces. His father a French émigré and his mother a lady-in-waiting to a Polish countess, Frederic Chopin grew up in a cultured household outside of Warsaw. Chopin expressed an interest in the piano at an early age and took lessons from Josef Elsner and Wojciech Zywny. At the age of 16, he entered the newly established Warsaw Conservatory. Graduating after three years, Chopin began to make name for himself performing concerts in Vienna and Warsaw. Even with such early success, he decided to leave Poland for Paris in 1831 due to the country’s political instability and his own musical ambition. The move turned out to be a fruitful one as Paris was the center of Romantic pianism during the 1830s, and Chopin quickly became one the movement’s leading figures. Introductions by talented friends such as Liszt, Schumann, and Pleyel allowed Chopin easy entrance into the elite Parisian salons, a key venue for artists of the time. There, he quickly became a sought after teacher and performer of great renown, known for his sensitive, artistic playing and skilled improvisations. Chopin developed numerous artistic connections and friendships through these private concerts and ran in Paris’ highest cultural circles. His friendships and associations included such diverse and talented individuals as writers Victor Hugo and Alexander Dumas, poet Heinrich Heine, and painter Eugene Delacroix.
