Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on August 15, 1875 in Holborn, England (a suburb of London). His father, Daniel Hughes Taylor, was a native of Sierra Leone, and his mother was English. Daniel Taylor came to England to study medicine. He was a student at Taunton College, Somerset and later at Kings College in London. His work led him to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and to obtain a license from the Royal College of Physicians. His father was not a part of Coleridge-Taylor's life, returning to Sierra Leone either before Samuel's birth or while he was a very young boy. William Tortolano in his book Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; Anglo-Black Composer, 1875-1912 (Metuchen, NJ, Scarecrow, 1977) states: The young doctor became an assistant... The white patients seemed to like the young assistant... Eventually he sought a practice of his own but this became disastrous because of resentment of his color. As an assistant he was received with little reservation, but as an independent doctor he was mistrusted. Dr. Taylor returned to Africa around 1876. As a child Coleridge-Taylor studied violin and sang in the choir of St. George's Church, Croydon. At the age of fifteen he was admitted by Sir George Grove to the Royal College of Music as a violin student. While at the Royal College his interest in composition grew. With the support of Colonel Herbert Walters, one of his first benefactors, and Grove, arrangements were made that Coleridge-Taylor would study composition with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. While studying with Stanford, Coleridge-Taylor competed for one of the nine open scholarships at the college and was awarded the fellowship in composition (1893). At that time Grove wrote, "Now you are a scholar...you are now before the world..."

From Other Guides African-African Musicians Eve Rabin Queler 100 Most Important Women In September of 1999, I became the Guide to Classical Music for About (at the time called About.com). My first article, Dead White Guys , examined 3 composers in musical history who can not be called a "dead white guy". That article has proven to have enduring popularity, and I have decided to pursue the topic over the next series of articles. The last installment featured Lili Boulanger . This week, the focus is on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

Classically Black: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Listen to this program Music of African-Americans Inspired British Composer British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was inspired by the black folk music of America, incorporating spirituals and other black melodies into classical music. He, in turn, became an inspiration for African-Americans in the late 1890s as a symbol of what free black men could achieve. WILL-FM’s Roger Cooper looks at Coleridge-Taylor’s life and music in this year’s Classically Black. Coleridge-Taylor, who frequently traveled to the United States to hold workshops for black musicians and composers, had a large influence on the music and philosophical views of the composers associated with the Harlem Renaissance. The worldwide recognition he achieved for his accomplishments was a source of pride for W.E.B. DuBois and other American blacks. Coleridge-Taylor was best known for his Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, which incorporated the spiritual “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” in its overture. By using the melodies of traditional American and African black songs in his compositions, Coleridge-Taylor wanted to do for black folk music what Brahms did for Hungarian folk music, Dvorak did for Bohemian music and Grieg for Norwegian music.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on August 15 th , 1875 in Holborn, which is in London. This is where he spent quite a lot of his childhood. He later moved to Croydon. His father was Daniel Hughes Taylor. He was a Native of Sierra Leone. He was not really part of the Coleridge's life. This was because he was a medical student who passed his exams very quickly and decided to go back to Africa in 1876. His father had trained in London where he met Samuel Coleridge's future mother. Before he was born, Daniel left and made little to no contact with his son. His mother was English, and white. At West Croydon Station, Coleridge collapsed of pneumonia on August 28 th , 1912. He struggled home, and went straight to his bed where for four days he laid there, before dying on the 1 st September 1912. He was thirty-seven. When Coleridge was living in London he had joined the church of St. Mary Magdalene, where he joined the church choir. It was his voice that helped him become so successful. Although Jeffery Self, an expert of British music, pointed out that money was extremely important if you wanted to be a successful musician, at this time many musicians were rich and were able to pay for instruments and music lessons. This was before students got grants or loans. This is why Colonel Walters helped Coleridge. He said "It was taking a piece of cloth and turning it into a glove." He persuaded the director of music, Sir George Grove to let Coleridge become a student at the Royal College of Music. This enabled him to teach, write and play music much better.
