The Week's Famous and Infamous Women
Pianist and Composer Avril Coleridge-Taylor (1903-1998) Avril Coleridge-Taylor , the daughter of British-born black composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (not to be confused with the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge), inherited her father's musical talent. Avril was only 9 years old when her father died in 1912, but she grew up with his legacy and enhanced it with her own. Samuel had been a well-known and popular composer, teacher, and conductor who gave numerous performances in the United Kingdom and made three tours of North America before his early death from pneumonia at age 37. Avril followed in her father's footsteps and became a pianist, composer, and conductor. She wrote orchestral and instrumental music, along with a number of popular ballads including April, Who Knows , and The Dreaming Water Lily . During her career, Avril wrote more than 90 compositions and was the first woman to conduct the band of the Royal Marines. She also conducted major orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. Because her mother was white, Avril was light-skinned enough to pass as a white woman. She confided later in her life that when she traveled in South Africa during the 1950s, she felt guilty about staying in accommodations restricted to white guests. Despite any inner conflict she may have felt over her biracial heritage, Avril honored her father's memory and took great pride in being his daughter. Her 1979 book, The Heritage of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

The National Portrait Gallery
Ever since its foundation in 1856, the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) has selected the portraits that form its vast collection - the largest in the world - on the criteria that the Gallery is about history, not art, and about the status of the sitter, not the quality or character of any particular portrait. Which BME people have been considered to be of sufficient importance to British history to be represented in the NPG? Most portraits in the NPG collection as a whole are of men and this applies equally to the portraits of BME people. These people were all leading figures in their own lifetimes in a variety of fields. Included among them are Ira Aldridge, actor, Samuel Taylor-Coleridge, composer, William Cuffay, Chartist leader, Sarah Forbes Bonnetta, goddaughter to Queen Victoria, Dadabhai Naoroji, the first MP of Indian origin, Aga Sultan Sir Mohammed Shah Aga Khan, Sir Mancherjee Merwanjee Bhownaggree, MP and Barrister, Bishop James Johnson, and Vengalil Krishnan Kunjikrishna Menon, Barrister, Propagandist, Publisher and Councillor. By taking a look at some of these people's lives it becomes clear that BME people in the 19th and early 20th centuries made a strong and important contribution to British society. Ira Aldridge 1807-1867 Born in New York, the acclaimed 19th century actor Ira Aldridge was soon taken by the lure of the stage. Only by emigrating could he fulfil his ambitious dream of becoming a serious actor. Working his passage as a ship's steward, he arrived in Liverpool in 1825.

Editor's Notes It is perhaps the overwhelming preeminence of African-Americans in the popular music fields that has caused history to slight such composers as the present four, who preferred to function within the field of concert music. All four, however, whether from the U.S., England, or Canada, identified themselves musically as black by using folkloric sources. While it may be impossible to pin down dates of composition exactly, it is almost certain that these four otherwise diverse suites were all composed within the same decade.

THIS MONTH'S SPECIALS
DEMOCRACY'S DENIAL: Revolutions in Wilmington
Wednesday, February 6, noon In 1898, white supremacists seized power from the racially integrated city government of Wilmington, NC. They burned the town's black newspaper; exiled the mayor and several officials, many of whom were black; killed a number of other African Americans; and drove thousands of black businessmen out of town. While the federal government looked away, North Carolina limited voting to white men and a general pall of silence fell over the region. The legacy lived on, and 73 years later, Wilmington faced several weeks of racial violence. Democracy's Denial: Revolutions in Wilmington artfully frames the Wilmington story and examines contemporary Wilmington's efforts to address its history through public forums and partnerships.
