Henry Cowell
A tireless musical explorer and inventor, Cowell was born 11 March 1897 in Menlo Park, California, where he grew up surrounded by a wide variety of Oriental musical traditions, his father's Irish folk heritage, and his mother's Midwestern folktunes. Already composing in his early teens, Cowell began formal training at age 16 with Charles Seeger at the University of California. Further studies focused primarily on world music cultures. His use of varied sound materials, experimental compositional procedures, and a rich palette colored by multiple non-European and folk influences revolutionized American music and popularized, most notably, the tone cluster as an element in compositional design. In addition to tone clusters evident in such works as Advertisement and Tiger , Cowell experimented with the "string piano" in works like The Aeolian Harp and The Banshee where strings are strummed or plucked inside the piano. Studies of the musical cultures of Africa, Java, and North and South India enabled Cowell to stretch and redefine Western notions of melody and rhythm; mastery of the gamelan and the theory of gamelan composition led to further explorations with exotic instruments and percussion. Later, Cowell developed the concept of indeterminancy or "elastic form" in works like the Mosaic Quartet (where performers determine the order and alternation of movements).

Henry Cowell Henry Cowell (1887-1965) was a leading composer, critic and educator who worked largely in the experimental vein of American music. He was born in California and attended Stanford University. Throughout the 1950s he lived in New York City and upstate New York, and taught at the New School. Through his journal (New Music Quarterly), his concert promotions, and his WBAI-New York radio programs, he is credited with having “rediscovered” Charles Ives, published Carl Ruggles, and effectively promoted Edgard Varese. Aside from his famous book, New Musical Resources , however, Henry Cowell’s many essays, reviews, manifestos, and other writings have never been gathered and published in book form. In the thirty-five years since Cowell’s death, he has attained a significant position as a composer (there are over 130 CD recordings available); live concerts featuring Cowell works are no longer uncommon; and an authorized biography is being written. Poet, essayist, composer, performance artist and a founding member of Fluxus, Dick Higgins was a leading proponent of “Intermedia,” which he named. Through his publishing house, Something Else Press, he issued from 1964 to 1973 the Wrst “artist’s books,” including works by Emmett Williams, Claes Oldenburg, and Merce Cunningham, and reissued six books by Gertrude Stein (notably

    Henry Cowell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Henry Cowell March 11 December 10 ) was an American composer and teacher. He is considered one of the most influential of early 20th century American composers. Cowell was born in Menlo Park, California into a rural family. He was encouraged to study music by his parents, and played the violin from an early age. He began to compose in his teens, producing the piano piece The Tides of Manaunaun , which calls for the pianist to use his forearm to play many notes at once. This is one of the first uses of the cluster chord in music, and he continued to use it liberally in his later works. Despite his experimental leanings, he received no formal musical education (and little education of any kind) until he attended the University of California, Berkeley

Subversive Prophet: Henry Cowell as Theorist and Critic
By Kyle Gann Excerpts from the article published in The Whole World of Music: A Henry Cowell Symposium , David Nicholls, editor (Harwood Academic Press, 1997) What the cynics claim of John Cage may be truer of Henry Cowell: that he is more important for his writings and ideas than for his music. In Cage's case, those of us deeply attached to Sonatas and Interludes , the 1950 String Quartet, Music of Changes Hymnkus Europeras I-V , and other beautiful and influential compositions find the cliche ludicrously unfounded. Applied to Cowell, though, the statement might hold water, if only because Cowell's compositional output has never become as well known or widely distributed as Cage's. Though often impressive, in the role of composer Cowell appears as a minor figure in the august company of Ives, Stravinsky, Varese, Schoenberg, and others of his time. As a musical thinker, however, and theorist of new musical possibilities, he is a giant in a virtual desert, towering above all his contemporaries with the possible exception of Schoenberg (and at present, Cowell's speculations look to be more prophetic and enduring than Schoenberg's, whose influence is no longer in the ascendant). It is not difficult to argue that Cowell was the least tradition-bound, most original musical thinker and theorist of his era. Much of what was best in Cowell's legacy can be found in his writings and publications: his theory books New Musical Resources and
