Three works by George Crumb, the American master composer. Star-Child, the 2001 Grammy Winner for Best Contemporary Composition. This work was considered "unrecordable" by Boulez as it calls for multiple orchestras to perform simultaneously with different conductors. Through digital technology, Bridge has provided the first studio recording of this work ever. Thomas Conlin leads the Warsaw Philharmonic to extraordinary heights in Crumb's apocalyptic masterpiece. Mundus Canis (A Dog's World)is a series of short works for guitar and percussion. David Starobin and George Crumb play these 5 works, based on the Crumb family dogs. Crumb and Starobin have since taken this piece on the road for a series of performances both across the USA and around the world. George Crumb calls his Three Early Songs "the sins of his youth." These songs are certainly far from sinful, though stylistically far different from his later work. Crumb performs them on the piano, while his daughter, Ann Crumb, sings the vocal parts.

George Crumb is one of the most important living composers. The George Crumb Music Festival by the School of Music and the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon The George Crumb Music Festival includes an exhibit of musical scores as design, lectures by Mr. Crumb and with designer Ken Hiebert, public coachings in which Mr. Crumb will interact with student performers, chamber music concerts presented by Carnegie Mellon faculty and distinguished guest artists, and an orchestra concert presenting his extraordinary work for very large orchestra. A full schedule can be accessed from www.cmu.edu/cfa/music Crumb was born 24 October, 1929 in Charleston, West Virginia. He received his D.M.A. at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he studied composition with Ross Lee Finney. He has received numerous awards, honors and commissions, including the Pulitzer Prize (in 1968) and the MacDowell Medal. He is now composer in residence at the University of Pennsylvania. Music historian and scholar Nicolas Slonimsky writes of Crumb: "In his music he preserves the external formalities of traditional music, suggesting Baroque procedures, but he makes revolutionary changes in his technical resources, demanding from the performers an exceptional precision and subtlety of interpretation, exploiting the extreme instrumental registers and making use of outlandish effects in the vocal part, including tongue clicks, explosive shrieks, hissing and whispering, as well as singing fractional intervals. … His musical notation often emulated the symbolic designs affected by some composers of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; particularly intriguing is his use of circular or spiral staves for recurring motives, as exemplified in

The Music of George Crumb January 15, UBC Recital Hall This performance was in honour of George Crumb 's belated 70th birthday, which was back in October. The man himself was there. Crumb is the last surviving Great American Composer; no one of his stature is left on this side of the Atlantic. His work is part of the canon cited by avant-garde leaders and mainstream classical music lovers alike. What sets his music apart from that of other well-known American composers is its immediacy: no political or academic point of departure jumps out at the listener. Most New World composers, such as the New York School surrounding Cage, have a more cosmopolitan-sounding output. Crumb trained in Berlin in 1954-55 and his interests are certainly global, but the result aches of his native West Virginia. Only Ives did as much to consolidate an American sound. Crumb's sound is delicate and affects the body long before the listener is aware of any beat. The music's rhythm is a sort of implied, unheard current. There is a calm alertness that comes with it. An Idyll for the Misbegotten started off the show, featuring program notes that included Chinese poets, French saints, and other factions of influence. Crumb's staggering plurality is only matched by his easygoing manner; he speaks and writes music with simple surfaces, concealing a vast pool of resources.

Tour 2000 / George Crumb Born: October 24, 1929, in Charleston, West Virginia, USA
George Crumb is internationally known for music that elicits feelings of mystery and wonderment. By building upon the coloristic legacy of Debussy, the harmonic densities and rhythmic incisiveness of Bartok, and continuing the sonic pioneering of the American composer, Henry Cowell, Crumb has been able to fashion a music of powerful originality that possesses a universally recognized personal stamp and has won Crumb the affection of both performers and audiences alike.
Indeed, works such as his Vox Balanae are now considered by many to be part of the standard chamber music repertoire, and his Little Suite for Christmas, written for Lambert Orkis
Certainly, a hallmark of any Crumb work is his unique use of instruments in which he seeks to expand their color palette through non-traditional playing techniques.
Four Nocturnes, Night Music II for Violin and Piano 1964
This is music that engulfs and enfolds, transporting the listener to sonorous worlds of dazzling luminosity.
Lambert Orkis
Anne-Sophie Mutter on George Crumb:
I was both fascinated and moved at the same time. His compositions are characterized by his ability to unexpectedly use the expression of each instrument to its fullest. One feels as if one has entered into a completely new world of sound.

Your most recent work occupies a unique position in your catalogue. I think, on the one hand, it addresses and sustains certain issues that have always been present in your music since you mature period began. It also, I believe, calls up a few new concerns. Concerts, symposium, and master class bring composer to Rochester
ROCHESTER, NY - The Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer George Crumb, known for his powerful and evocative use of imagery and the development of unusual and extended performance techniques, will be feted next month at the Eastman School of Music in a festival of his music. The three-day event, December 1-3 , is the brainchild of Eastman doctoral piano student, Thomas Rosenkranz, with the help of Eastman Professor of Composition Robert Morris. Two free concerts of Crumb's music highlight the festival; both take place 8 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall (26 Gibbs St.):
    • The Sunday, December 2 , concert is an all-piano recital with guest pianist-composer David Mattingly performing the remarkable Makrokosmos, Volumes I and II (1972-73) for amplified piano. As in many of Crumb's works, this set of "12 Fantasy-Pieces after the Zodiac" utilizes unique notational aspects; every fourth piece is notated as a visual symbol. Mattingly, an Eastman alumnus and assistant professor of piano at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, has enchanted audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with his performances of traditional and more adventurous 20th-century piano music. Crumb himself has described Mattingly as a "superb pianist" and predicts a "brilliant future" for him.

This Concertino doesn't involve unusual performance techniques like Crumb's does, but Sessions treats each player as a soloist. Wind players are asked to play multiple instruments, augmenting their challenge. There are occasional ensemble problems in the performance of the Sessionsmostly in terms of synchronizationbut then again, a lot is expected of each player. And in the end, the energy of the piece is sustained, so it's easy to overlook such minor blemishes. GEORGE CRUMB
Born: October 24, 1929. Charleston, WV
    In his own words...

"In Ancient Voices of Children , as in earlier Lorca settings, I have sought musical images that enhance and reinforce the powerful yet strangely haunting imagery of Lorca's poetry. I feel that the essential meaning of this poetry is concerned with the most primary things: life death, love, the smell of the earth, the sounds of the wind and the sea. These ur-concepts are embodied in a language which is primitive and stark, but which is capable of infinitely subtle nuance." American composer and teacher. Crumb has developed a style that uses new techniques in a dramatic, narrative manner.
George Crumb's career is rather typical for American composers in the second half of the twentieth century. His training was largely in American universities (he received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan). In turn, he has spent the majority of his career teaching composition at various universities. He is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, where he began teaching in 1965. He has received a number of awards (including a Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for his Echoes of Time and the River ), as well as numerous honorary degrees.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer George Crumb to Visit CSU, Chico
CSU Chico will be hosting a weeklong residency of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb, which will culminate in a free concert entitled The Music of George Crumb, Friday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall. George Crumb is an internationally known composer who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for his new music composition, "Echoes of Time and the River." Other awards he has won include the 1971 International Rostrum of Composers (UNESCO) Award and the Fromm, Guggenheim, Koussevitsky, and Rockefeller Foundation Awards. Crumb became the 36th recipient of the MacDowell medal in 1995, which is awarded annually to a composer, writer, or visual artist who made an extraordinary contribution to the nation's culture. CSU, Chico Music Department faculty member David Colson, who is coordinating Crumb's visit, hopes the audience comes away from the performance feeling they've had a unique experience. "George Crumb is somebody who has made a deep and profound mark on American culture," said Colson. "He is considered as being important, not only as a pioneer, but as someone who has established himself as a benchmark for classical music composition in modern times."

"Echoes of Time": Temporal Proportions in Score and Performance within George Crumb's Oeuvre
William E. Lake (Bowling Green State University)
George Crumb professes to compose intuitively. Yet, his works exhibit a high degree of structure. This is especially true in the realm of pitch, where Richard Bass explains Crumb's structural consistency in terms of an interaction of octatonic and whole-tone scales. On the other hand, the forms of Crumb's works, while mostly sectional, are exceedingly diverse. His music is interrupted by lengthy pauses and often unmetered-seemingly improvisatory in character. So it may come as a surprise that simple proportions and golden means figure significantly in his formal structures. This paper explores temporal proportions in representative works by Crumb, analyzing both scores and recorded performances. The ratios 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and the golden mean all appear far more often than could be attributed to chance. Important formal junctures align with simple ratios in all pieces examined, in some cases on multiple levels. Works tend not to be systematically structured top-down. Instead, lengths of successive sections and movements build up networks of proportional relationships. Where comparable, performance proportions correspond closely to those of the score primarily on the large scale. Local proportions tend to diverge. ARB: 9/28/99
