Music for the Beginning of Time featuring George Crumb Celebrated composer George Crumb , was joined by music professors Eugene Narmour and Anna Weesner of Penn, and Robert Maggio of West Chester University in a special preconcert panel discussion at 7:00 pm of Crumb's Vo x Balaenae (Voice of the Whale), a work that symbolizes prehistoric time. Following an introduction by Prof. Narmour, discussion quickly turned to the nature of time and timelessness in the music of George Crumb, and in particular in the composition of the Vox Balaenae. Composed in 1971 for the New York Camerata, the Vox Balanae took as its inspiration the then newly recorded song of whales. Using amplified instruments to suggest the otherworldliness of the submarine voice of the whale. Prof. Narmour, making reference to Beethoven's distance and disinterest from pieces that he had composed earlier in his career, asked Prof. Crumb if a composition composed some thirty years ago maintained any relevance for him as the composer. Crumb's reply was that "with each different group of performers [the Vox Balanae] is reborn" and thus will always maintain a newness that is perhaps obscured by the date of composition. The downside, according to Crumb, is that the music is ever "vulnerable to less than convincing performances."

Makrokosmos Vol. II
Columbia. Robert Miller, piano.
I love Miller's performance of these crazy piano works. He is extremely animated and theatrical amidst the formidable obstacle course that the performer faces in this work. He is called to strum the strings inside the piano, scream, whoop and holler, preparing the strings, etc. In the 4th cut on side 1, the performer is instructed: "serene, desireless, like a Nirvana-trance!" O.K. Miller makes it work. it's really fantastic. I have become quite attached to these performances to the exclusion of all others. (LP)

"Makrokosmos, Volume 1 and 2," Christiane Mathe, piano (Koch)
George Crumb was at the height of his influence in 1972 when he wrote "Makrokosmos." If his historical moment seems to have passed, we shouldn't forget how unique and colorful his version of the avant-garde remains it's not Crumb's fault his imitators didn't have his communicative gifts. These works, each a set of 12 fantasies based on the zodiac, display his sharp ear for sonorities and catalog then-trendy experimental techniques: strumming, rapping, placing objects inside the keyboard, vocalized shouts. But the tools are less important than the overall dramatic effect of the pieces, performed here with panache by Christiane Mathe. Yeah, it's weird, but wonderful, too. Performed 16th December 1999 in the Bank of Ireland Mostly Modern Series, Ireland. One of the leading composers to emerge from America this century, George Crumb has been the recipient of numerous honours, awards and commissions, including the 1968 Pulitzer Prize, the 1971 International Rostrum of Composers (UNESCO) Award: Fromm, Guggenheim, Koussevitsky and Rockerfeller Foundation Awards; and is a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1995, George Crumb became the 36th recipient of the MacDowell Medal. In his recital in the Mostly Modern Series George Crumb was joined by the leading American guitarist David Starobin. Starobin's performances have earned the native New Yorker prominence in the world of classical music. Starobin is the only guitarist ever to have been awarded the Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Career Prize, and he has been honoured by Harvard University's Fromm Foundation for "his commitment to the music of our time". During the past 27 years, more than 300 works have been composed for and dedicated to David, a body of work which has helped to re-define the repertoire of the late twentieth century guitar.
