A Pronunciation Guide to Russian Composers, Works and Terms created by Kerry Kornblatt,Yuri Fayner, Lisa Schum, and Margaret Henry Balakirev Mily Alexeyevitch Balakirev (1837-1910) was one of the "Mighty Five" composers that initiated the Russian nationalist movement in Russian music (Grout 461). He was actually known as the father of the Five even though he remained the least prolific. Also, Balakirev was the most conservative of the group. He collected Russian folk songs which he revised and incorporated into his works. He also used oriental elements in his compositions such as in his oriental fantasy "Islamay." Another of his famous works is his piano transcription of Glinka's "The Lark" which is a basic piece in Russian piano composition (Colles 77). Boris Godunov This opera by Mussorgsky is one of the greatest works of 19th century opera. The idea for the opera derived from a poem by Pushkin (Grout 461-462). The plot of this nationalist piece involves the accusation of Godunov of killing the Tsar's son in order to attain rule. Moussorgsky incorporated a diverse cross section of people into the presentation of the opera representing the lowliest peasant to the mighty (although guilt-stricken) tsar. Borodin, Alexander

Frequenta le lezioni serali presso l’‹ cole des Beaux-Arts di Marsiglia. Si guadagna da vivere nella bottega del padre e in seguito lavorando come fornaio e istruttore di guida. Entra all’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts di Parigi. Sposa Maria Astruc, da cui divorzierà nel 1959. Vince una borsa di studio triennale a Parigi. Lascia Marsiglia per Parigi, abita nello stesso palazzo di Giacometti. Prime ricerche con il gesso e il ferro. Segue a Montpellier uno stage di ceramica. Utilizza il piombo in foglie a sbalzo e dei fili di ferro saldati. All’inizio degli anni cinquanta, esegue le prime sculture in metallo saldato partendo da scarti industriali recuperati in una officina a Trans-en-Provence e a Villetaneuse poi. Orchestral Music In his four orchestral Suites Cui demonstrates his ability in the handling of attractive smaller forms, belying contemporary accusations of lack of skill in orchestration.
