He is dedicated to the restoration of dignity to the profession of making non-commercial music as part of a personal search for future social, political and spiritual forms. A tone-poem for radio that draws on a number of never-used sounds from the composer's archives, as well as newly recorded materials such as the magical singing tones of high-tension wires in the wind, and the elusive musical hums of the Bay of La Speza (Italy). These sounds are as much about acoustic spaces as they are about geographical ones, and while all vastly different, are powerful sources of natural melody, rhythm, and harmony. Above all they are sounds that suggest the presence of "voices", human, ghostly or otherwise. The definitive character of A Beginner's Guide to Attracting Birds is given by the gradual and continuous digital transformation of these sounds into those of human voices. Live Performance Instrument for Alvin Composer Alvin Curran has been performing live with electronic instrunts for decades. One of his performance setups was a piece of software written with Max/MSP that did some simple filtering and looping on input signal. He approached me with the hopes of acquiring an instrument that was more versatile, more efficient, capable of a much wider range of processing and able to store presets. Together we conjured a system that performed a variety of digital signal processing (phase vocoding, harmonizing, looping, granular manupulation, comb filters, delays, filtering, reverb and a panning system). These processing modules were ordered the way he wanted them, and connected in a way to avoid unneccessary CPU usage. Alvin had also developed some very sophisticated sampler instruments that he was playing with AKAI samplers. I also brought his whole AKAI world into the Max/MSP application that I designed for him thereby reducing his setup to a single Apple Powerbook and a MIDI Keyboard. This screen shot shows the main control interface for Alvin's new instrument. Input signal (from his software sampler instruments, or microphones) flows from top to bottom, going through each processing module (colored boxes). Individual wetness measures for each module allow him to find interesting mixes of processing; modules with no wetness are turned off to avoid additional CPU usage.

Alvin Curran Piero Scaruffi Legal restrictions - Termini d'uso Links Links to other sites IN PREPARAZIONE - AGGIORNATO SOLTANTO AL 1991 Laureatosi in musica con Elliot Carter e vinta una borsa di studio, nel 1964 Alvin Curran parti' per Berlino per andare a studiare accanto ad altri giovani compositori (fra gli altri, Bussotti); ma, piu' irrequieto dei compagni, abbandono' presto l'austero ambiente classico, dirigendo su Roma. E qui pianto' le tende, anche se cio' significo' adattarsi a suonare piano-bar per guadagnarsi da vivere. Nel 1965 fece lega con un manipolo di esiliati (fra cui il pianista Rzewsky) e formo' il collettivo Musica Elettronica Viva, dedito non solo all'elettronica, ma anche alla musica dodecafonica e al folk tibetano. Due anni dopo si uni' loro il jazzista Steve Lacy e l'esperienza si dilato' a dismisura, culminando in happening pubblici durante le folli notte romane del Sessantotto. In questo periodo Curran suonava con una tromba rotta e un bidone di benzina. Raccoglieva inoltre registrazioni di rumori naturali: scrosci di fontana, passi, chiassate di bambini. E, mentre progettava musica naturale, coltivava amicizie importanti, da Giacinto Scelsi a Anthony Braxton. Da questo background ebbe origine il primo disco, Canti E Vedute Del Giardino Magnetico (1973), una serie di variazioni improvvisate su un nastro di rumori ambientali, ispirate al minimalismo mistico di Riley, ma improntate a una ben piu' profonda filosofia naturalistica: nell'elenco degli strumenti compaiono anche vento, fili d'alta tensione, passi e rane; rondini di Roma, api di Lerici, un condotto d'acqua, la spiaggia. Piu' armonica, scacciapensieri, kalimba, campane di vetro, filicorno, tubo di plastica; e il sintetizzatore, con cui improvvisa raga che alla Riley. E il progetto si avvale anche di arie popolari. Musica concreta, musica minimalista, musica improvvisata e musica popolare confluiscono in un ininterrotto poema sonoro.
