Nothing is known of his early years. In 1580 he went to Paris as a servant of the English Ambassador, and while there he converted to Catholicism. In 1588 he became a bachelor of music at Christ Church, Oxford, and then began to travel all over Europe. In 1598 he was appointed lutenist to King Christian IV of Denmark, but was dismissed in 1606 after a financial battle.     Lachrimae of John Dowland This composition of the acclaimed English lutenist and songwriter John Dowland (1563-1626) was arguably the single most influential piece of Elizabethan music. While the enduring popularity of the tune known as "Greensleeves" makes it the best known example of the era’s music, no other work matched the impact or fame of the Lachrimae A haunting, melancholic piece, the Lachrimae first appeared around 1595 as a pavane for solo lute. It seized the musical imagination of England with an unprecedented intensity, leading to dozens of arrangements for virtually every instrument and ensemble. Among the notable keyboard transcriptions are settings by William Byrd, Thomas Morley and Giles Farnaby as found in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. In tribute to Dowland, other composers incorporated the theme of the four descending notes that form the opening phrase into new instrumental pieces. Although Dowland complained of the many "false and imperfect" versions of Lachrimae that were in circulation, he was justifiably proud of his "famous tune". It became a literal "signature tune" as he even signed his name on occasion as "
