On the occasion of what would have been the Maestro's hundredth birthday, RCA would like to remind us that there is more to Ellington's legacy than commercial jingles, and more than even the song hits of Broadway's Sophisticated Ladies Remember the Frank Sinatra "suitcase" from Reprise a few years ago? The Duke Ellington Centennial Edition: The Complete RCA Victor Recordings 1927-1973 is even bigger - 24 (yes, twenty-four) CDs spanning some five decades of musical brilliance. This should not be mistaken for Duke's career output; just as Sinatra's "suitcase" only collected his recordings for the Reprise label, Ellington recorded for numerous labels over the years. Born 29 April 1899 in Washington DC, composer, bandleader, and pianist Edward Kennedy ("Duke") Ellington was recognized in his lifetime as one of the greatest jazz composers and performers. Nicknamed "Duke" by a boyhood friend who admired his regal air, the name stuck and became indelibly associated with the finest creations in big band and vocal jazz. A genius for instrumental combinations, improvisation, and jazz arranging brought the world the unique "Ellington" sound that found consummate expression in works like "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and the symphonic suites Black, Brown, and Beige (which he subtitled "a Tone Parallel to the History of the Negro in America") and Harlem ("a Tone Parallel to Harlem"). Beginning keyboard studies at the age of seven, Ellington's earliest influences were the ragtime pianists. He taught himself harmony at the piano and at 17, made his professional debut. Encouraged by Fats Waller, he moved to New York in 1923 and, during the formative Cotton Club years, experimented with and developed the style that would quickly bring him worldwide success and recognition. Ellington would be among the first to focus on musical form and composition in jazz using ternary forms and "call-and-response" techniques in works like Concerto for Cootie (known in its familiar vocal version as Do Nothin' till You Hear from Me ) and Cotton Tail and classic symphonic devices in his orchestral suites. In this respect, he would influence the likes of Monk, Mingus, and Evans.

Yale President Kingman Brewster awarded 32 Duke Ellington Medals to these icons. Since that time, 16 other great jazz musicians have received the medal. In the twenty-five years since it was founded, the Duke Ellington Fellowship at Yale has come of age. Great American artists, themselves Ellington Fellows, regularly visit Yale and inner-city school classrooms each year for concerts and classwork. More the 150,000 New Haven school children have heard world class performances, received instruction, and been inspired by our program. "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." C onsidered one of the greatest jazz composers of all time, Duke Ellington had an enormous impact on the popular music of the late 20th century. Among his more than two thousand songs are such hits as "In A Sentimental Mood," "Sophisticated Lady," "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good," and "I'm Beginning To See The Light." For almost fifty years he toured the world as a band leader and piano player. Today his recordings remain among the most popular jazz of the big-band era. Born in Washington D.C. in 1899, Edward Kennedy Ellington, better known as "Duke," began playing piano as a child. His mother, who also played the piano, oversaw his education, and by the time he was seventeen he began playing professionally. Making his name as a piano player in Washington, Ellington started to compose his own music. In 1923 he moved to New York, and the following year formed his own band, the Washingtonians. By 1927, Ellington's band had found a small base of fans and secured an engagement at Harlem's famous Cotton Club. This proved to be a major turning point in Ellington's career, providing him with access to larger audiences through radio and recordings. In 1939, Billy Strayhorn joined the band as an arranger, composer, and sometimes pianist. The two worked well together, continuing in the tradition that Ellington had built. Strayhorn's contribution to Ellington's achievements at the time were significant, and even some of their most popular tunes (such as "Take The A Train") were written by Strayhorn. Though not as well known as much of Ellington's other work, pieces such as "Jack the Bear," "Ko-ko," and "Cotton Tail" (done between 1939 and 1942), had a profound influence on much of the jazz composition and performance that followed. Though Ellington continued to compose and perform regularly throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the public demand for big-band music had faded. It was not until 1956, with a triumphant performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, that Ellington re-emerged as an important voice in contemporary music.
