Ivie Anderson Ivie Anderson was one of Duke Ellingtons original canaries. Her voice is sweet and swinging. Her recordings have recently been released and gives the listener a rare opportunity to travel back in time and experience this trend setter. Her style influenced later singers as much for elegance and style of appearance as for musical delivery. -Ismael Rangel Return to Main page

Duke Ellington By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 29 April, 1899, Washington, DC Died 24 May, 1974 1999 marked the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth. One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Ellington's centenary is being celebrated by artists from all manner of musical traditions, providing ample evidence of the extraordinary impact of this jazz luminary. Early Years Born Edward Kenney Ellington, Duke Ellington grew up in a middle class Washington DC suburb and began playing piano at the age of seven. He quickly developed a taste for ragtime and stride playing in the vein of Scott Jopin and Art Tatum. By the early '20s, he was the leader of a local band, the Washingtonians, and he brought this group to the burgeoning jazz centre of Harlem.

    Duke Ellington
Edward Kennedy (Duke) Ellington began as a stride pianist, and matured into a composer/arranger who was comfortable in a wide range of ensembles from piano and bass duo, to large orchestras. In 1927 his band became house band at the Cotton Club, a position he kept for five years. His popular hits like "Satin Doll" and "Mood Indigo" provided a firm financial base, allowing him to have musicians available to try out his arrangements at all times. He was an influence to others with his unique melodic gifts, his harmonic innovations, and his daring use of odd intervals. He demonstrated how well swing worked with the most contemporary jazz styles of the generation which followed him. News Features Reviews Books ... Newsletter Duke Ellington Memorial Dedicated in Harlem Sculptor
    Robert Graham
Duke Ellington Memorial The sculpture after unveiling In a ceremony crowded with New York politicians and dotted with an artist or two, Robert Graham's Duke Ellington Memorial was unveiled on the northeast corner of Central Park on July 1, 1997. A pleasanter gathering could hardly have been imagined, as the Loren Schoenberg Big Band played selections from the Ellington repertoire, including Jack the Bear and Take the A Train, while dignitaries and residents of the Harlem neighborhood mingled in the noon-time sun. The gala celebration marked the first-ever New York City monument to a black artist, the first memorial in the U.S. to Ellington and the first New York public-art commission for Graham. The Ellington project has been in the works since 1979, when the pianist Bobby Short conceived of the memorial and began raising the approximately $1 million in funds for it. Done in black patinated bronze, the 25-foot-tall memorial stands like a kind of guardian figure, facing outward at the uptown gateway to Central Park and Harlem at Fifth Avenue and 110th Street. The work features an eight-foot-tall sculpture of Ellington standing next to an open grand piano. The tableau is supported by three 10-foot-tall minimalist columns, atop of which stand a total of nine nude caryatid figures representing the muses. It is centered within the Duke Ellington Circle, two semicircular plazas that are gently stepped to form an amphitheater suitable for performances.

Other Information: Ellington's actual name is Edward Kennedy Ellington. Even though the majority of his work was in popular jazz idioms, Ellington composed a small quantity of works for classical ensembles and one opera. His music has influenced many composers in a variety of idioms. Below is an essay from contributor, Richard V. Duffy, who is working on a book about Ellington. EDWARD "DUKE" ELLINGTON "THE ENTREPRENEUR OF COMPOSITION" In the year 1999, The Pulitzer Prize-Special Award was bestowed posthumously on Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington commemorating the centennial year of his birth, April 29, 1899; in recognition of his musical genius, which brought to the surface his sensitivity to art and beauty, for the principles of democracy-through the medium of jazz and popular music, made an indelible contribution to art and culture. By the time of his passing, and even before that, Ellington was viewed as one of the greatest of all composers and musicians. The French government honored him with the highest award, the Legion of Honor; the United States government bestowed upon him the highest civil honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Duke was known to have entertained royalty, and, those whom abode in the more common idiom of life. By the end of his fifty-year entertainment span, Ellington had played over 20,000 performances-world wide....he was the Duke, the Duke of Ellington.
