Erkel Ferenc (Gyula, 1810. nov. 7. - Budapest, 1893. jún. 15.) Erkel a magyar zenei romantikának Liszt mellett a legjelentõsebb képviselõje. Nevéhez fûzõdik a magyar nemzeti opera megteremtése. Nyugati, elsõsorban olasz és francia operai mintákra támaszkodva, a 19. sz.-i magyar verbunkos zenének mély átélésével, kifejezési lehetõségeinek megfinomításával és kiszélesítésével sikerült viszonylag egységes nemzeti operanyelvet kialakítania. Mint karmester és szervezõ egyéniség rendkívül sokat tett a fõváros zenei életének felvirágoztatása érdekében. Neves sakkozó volt, az 1864-ben alakult Pesti Sakkkör alelnöke, egy év múlva elnöke. We Recommend Ernö Dohnányi, 1877 - 1960 Ernö Dohnányi was born on July 27, 1877 in the town of Poszony, which today is Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. His musical talent appeared early in his life and he was renowned as being a child prodigy; as a student, he was praised by no less a luminary by Johannes Brahms for his work, the Piano Quintet in C Minor. A celebrated pianist, Dohnányi's talent was such that even Belá Bartók supposedly chose to withdraw from public recitals because he feared unfavourable comparisons with him. Dohnányi's talent was recognised by his native land, and he was seen as its leading musician. He also played a role in promoting the works of Bartók and Kodály, though it has been said that he personally did not care for avant garde music. Indeed, his adherence to Romantic norms created some difficulties for him with other modernist composers, particularly among those he had deemed less talented than Bartók or Kodály. This was to have consequences for his later fame. Dohnányi was both an opponent of the Nazi and Soviet regimes: his distaste for totalitarianism meant he was in bad odour with the fascists for refusing to persecute Jews, and in bad odour with the Communists for opposing Soviet power. This series of brave political stands plus the disdain of his modernist colleagues meant that Dohnányi was virtually blotted out of Hungarian musical history.

In 1838 werd hij benoemd tot eerste dirigent en muzikaal leider van het nieuwe Nationale Theater te Boedapest. Hier kon hij zijn ideeën over een eigen Hongaarse opera vormgeven. In 1840 ging zijn eerste opera op een Hongaars gegeven en met Hongaarse tekst in première ( Báthory Mária Het succes was groot maar werd in 1844 overtroffen door dat van de opera Hunyadi László vanwege de onafhankelijksgedachte erin. In 1844 werd Erkels Hymnusz bekroond dat tot op heden het Hongaarse volkslied is gebleven. Van 1853 tot 1870 was hij leider van de door hem opgerichte Hongaarse Filharmonie.
