La vida breve (Life is Short) In 1907 he achieved a long-held ambition of travelling to Paris and was welcomed there by Ravel, Debussy (with whom he had previously corresponded) and especially by Paul Dukas. He completed several chamber works and began work on before the outbreak of war in 1914 compelled him to return to his native country. Two years later he was approached by Diaghilev to write a work for the Russian Ballet and in response composed a mime-play in two tableaux, El corregidor y la molinera (The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife) which, with some subsequent revisions, became El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) , and was produced highly successfully in London in 1919 with choreography by Massine and designs by Picasso. Following the deaths of his parents in 1919 he settled in Granada, where he remained until the end of the Civil War (1939), and composed several of his most important works including El retablo de maese Pedro (Master Peter's Puppet Show) and Concerto per clavicembalo (Harpsichord Concerto) . He then moved to Argentina and worked there until his death in 1946 just a few days before his 70th birthday, leaving the vast oratorio

COMPOSERS Manuel de Falla
Manuel de Falla
b. d. Born in 1876 in Cadiz, the historical seaport town at the southern-most tip of Andalucia, Manuel de Falla is the greatest Spanish composer of this century. His formal musical education began with piano lessons, and when Falla was twenty his family moved to Madrid where he studied with the distinguished teacher José Tragó. He then went on to study composition with Felipe Pedrell, the teacher and scholar who led the revival of Spanish music which took place towards the end of the nineteenth century. In 1904 Falla's one-act opera La vida breve (Life is Short) won the composition competition of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes and at the same time he was awarded a prestigious piano prize organised by the piano makers Ortiz y Cussó.
In 1907 he achieved a long-held ambition of travelling to Paris and was welcomed there by Ravel, Debussy (with whom he had previously corresponded) and especially by Paul Dukas. He completed several chamber works and began work on Noches en los jardines de Espãna (Nights in Gardens of Spain )before the outbreak of war in 1914 compelled him to return to his native country. Two years later he was approached by Diaghilev to write a work for the Russian Ballet and in response composed a mime-play in two tableaux, El corregidor y la molinera (The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife) which, with some subsequent revisions, became El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), and was produced highly successfully in London in 1919 with choreography by Massine and designs by Picasso.

Manuel de Falla: “El amor brujo por la Argentinita”
Orchestra conducted by Antal Dorati
Singer: La Argentinita
This music was written by Manuel de Falla in 1915 and is the most popular and internationally recognized work of this classical composer who first combined the melodies of flamenco and classical music. The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca considered de Falla as the perfect link between classical and popular music. Together in 1922 they organized the "Granada Contest of Cante Jondo".
Design by Cornejo for a production of "El amor brujo". Private collection (Madrid). This version of "El amor brujo" was recorded in 1944 with the Spanish singer and dancer "La Argentinita" during her last American tour, only a year before her death. "La Argentinita" made a complete recording of "El amor brujo" for the American record label Decca, which released the work on three ten-inch records. Antal Dorati, best known for his recordings of the works of Bartok and Kodály and the complete 105 symphonies of Haydn, conducted the Ballet Theater Orchestra. "La Argentinita's" personal singing style, very different from the stiffness customary in the classical music of the time, gives this rendition of de Falla's most Gypsy work a unique expressiveness and charm.

Falla, Manuel de (1876 - 1946)
Stage Works Manuel de Falla helped to support his family in Madrid, after a change in their fortunes, by composing zarzuelas, typically Spanish musical comedies. His first substantial stage work was the lyric drama La vida breve, completed in 1905 and first staged in Nice in 1913. The ballet El amor brujo (Love the Magician), with its ghostly story of gypsy jealousy, was first staged in Madrid two years later. The ballet El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), reached its final form for its London production under the impresario Dyagilev in 1919. The puppet opera El retablo de maese Pedro, based on an episode in the classical Cervantes novel Don Quixote, was completed in 1922. There are popular orchestral suites from the first three of these four works. Recommended Recordings

Orchestral Music Vocal Music Chamber Music Among chamber works by de Falla may be included the Concerto for harpsichord, with flute, oboe, clarinet, violin and cello, making use of the early keyboard instrument that had played an important part in his puppet opera El retablo de maese Pedro. Piano Music Piano works occupy a less important element among the compositions of Manuel de Falla, although the four Spanish Pieces and the early Serenata Andaluza offer pieces in characteristically Spanish musical idiom.
