Louise Farrenc The Hymne russe varié, op. 27 (1838), is the most elaborate piece of the present selection. It was composed shortly before the two piano quintets, op. 30 and 31. The first Nocturne, op. 49, was probably composed in the 1850’s. With this piece, with its elegant simplicity of expression, Louise Farrenc pays her tribute to the musical form created by the Irish composer John Field (1782-1837). The Variations brillantes sur un thème d’Aristide Farrenc , op. 2, date from 1824 at the latest. This was the first piece of hers to be published. Admired by Berlioz and Schumann, Farrenc was an exceptionally talented musician, as pianist, teacher (she was the only female professor at the Paris Conservatoire for the whole century!), musicologist and, above all, composer. She wrote three symphonies, a vast amount of solo piano music and much highly distinctive and notable chamber music. It is astonishing that such fine and tuneful works as her two piano quintets have lain relatively undisturbed for over a century. They were written in 1839/40 for the same forces as Schubert's Trout, and did much to establish her reputation. Her musical language combines the classical elegance of Haydn or Hummel with the innate romanticism of Weber or Mendelssohn - above all it possesses the elusive quality of freshness.

PIANO Peu séduisante, l'œuvre pour piano seul de Falla ne rappelle en rien, à mon avis, le lyrisme bouillonnant des "Nuits dans les jardins d'Espagne". Le pianisme m'apparaît souvent assez confus et touffu, la thématique peu consistante comme dans la longue "Fantaisie bétique". D'autre part, le caractère rhapsodique demeure assez peu marqué, ce qui semble une volonté manifeste du compositeur. Il faut excepter la très belle "Serenata andaluza" qui exploite bien, à mon avis, les sonorités cristallines du piano, et surtout la célèbre transcription de la "Danse rituelle du feu", véritable pyrotechnie pianistique à la violence sourde et entêtée, si caractéristique du maître, pièce qui marie magistralement, me semble-t-il, des effets de rythme et d'harmonie d'une nouveauté réelle. On the next pages you can find what I found out about this neglected composer. If you have any additional information on Louise Farrenc and her music, please let me know. Who was this woman? Well, at least it's not hard to say that she must have been a versatile woman. She was a composer, a pianist, a scholar, a teacher, a wife and a mother at the same time. My pages concentrate of course on the composer, because it's mostly her music which gives us a picture of her today. Fortunately in the last years there are more and more CDs with Louise Farrenc's music available. Now all of her symphonies are on CD (# 1 and 3 twice) and there are also some new releases of her chamber music. Hopefully this development will continue, because Louise Farrenc wrote some really fascinating music.
