Morton Feldman
Morton Feldman was born in New York on January 12, 1926. At the age of twelve he studied piano with Madame Maurina-Press, who had been a pupil of Busoni, and it was her who instilled in Feldman a vibrant musicality. At the time he was composing short Scriabin-esque pieces, until in 1941 he began to study composition with Wallingford Riegger. Three years later Stefan Wolpe became his teacher, though they spent much of their time together simply arguing about music. Then in 1949 the most significant meeting up to that time took place - Feldman met John Cage 1967 saw the start of Feldman's association with Universal Edition with the publication of his last graphically notated score, "In Search of an Orchestration". Then followed "On Time and the Instrumental Factor" (1969) in which he once more returned to precise notation, and from then on, with only the exception of two works in the early 1970s, he maintained control over pitch, rhythm, dynamics and duration. In 1973 the University of New York at Buffalo asked Feldman to become the Edgard Varese Professor, a post he held for the rest of his life. From the late 1970s his compositions expanded in length to such a degree that the second string quartet can last for up to five and a half hours. The scale of these works in particular has often been the cause for the controversy surrounding his works, but he would always be happy to attempt to explain his reasoning behind them:

Morton Feldman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Morton Feldman (born January 12 , died September 3 ) was an American composer . He is best known for his mature instrumental pieces which are frequently written for unusual groups of instruments, are very long and predominently quiet. Feldman was born in New York City . He studied piano with Madame Maurina-Press, a pupil of Ferruccio Busoni , and later composition with Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe . He did not agree with many of the views of these composition teachers, and he spent much of his time simply arguing with them. Feldman was composing at this time, but in a style very different to that he would later be associated with. In 1950, Feldman went to hear the

Morton Feldman (1926-1987)
No other musician on these pages can stake a claim for primary Beckett-related importance more than Morton Feldman, the iconoclastic American composer. Not only are Feldman's timeless, repetitive compositions often evocative of Beckett's minimalist prose, but a meeting in Berlin, 1976, lead to a warm relationship between the composer and the writer, one that bore fruit in several projects and collaborations.
Born in New York in 1926, Morton Feldman studied music and piano privately with several teachers before becoming the pupil of Stefan Wolpe after graduating high school in 1944. Spending much of this time "arguing about music," Feldman absorbed his lessons in academic atonality, but found himself still struggling to find his own voice. (He also absorbed some of his teacher's fondness for the visual arts.) In 1950 he met John Cage at a New York performance of Webern's Opus 21, quickly falling into a relationship that had a profound impact on his artistic development. Encouraging the younger composer to follow his instincts, to open his music to indeterminacy, and to challenge all forms of received tradition, John Cage became a mentor and even something of a father-figure, and their friendship lasted the rest of their lives.

Accompanied by audio file. Summary: Feldman is introduced by Lejaren Hiller. Feldman then discusses the contemporary music scene that he grew up in, during the 1940s when there was a distinct absence of experimental music being presented. He also talks about the genesis of works to be performed at that evening's concert, Two Pianos False relationships and the Extended Ending (1968), and Swallows of Salangan (1961). In this context he talks about his use of graphic notation and the problems he encountered regarding the control of rhythm. Post-Concert Discussion November 20, 1972
