Brian Ferneyhough was born in Coventry, England on 16 January 1943. He received formal musical training at the Birmingham School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, London. In 1968 he was awarded the Mendelssohn Scholarship, which enabled him to continue his studies in Amsterdam with Ton de Leeuw, and the following year obtained a scholarship to study with Klaus Huber at the Basel Conservatoire. Following Ferneyhough's move to mainland Europe, his music began to receive much wider recognition. At the 1968 Gaudeamus Composers' Competition in Holland he was awarded a prize for Sonatas for String Quartet and this success was repeated in 1969 and 1970 with Epicycle and Missa Brevis. The Italian section of the ISCM at its 1972 competition gave Ferneyhough an honorable mention (second place) for Firecycle Beta and two years later a special prize for Time and Motion Study III which was considered the best work submitted in all categories. Ferneyhough has also been the recipient of a Heinrich Strobel Foundation bursary from South West German Radio (1973), a German Academic Exchange award for 1976-77 and the Koussevitsky award for Transit which was judged to be the best contemporary work recorded in 1978.

Belt up and hold tight His music is so complex it needs a 3ft score - and a strapped-in performer. Tom Service meets Brian Ferneyhough Tom Service

The Guardian
Composer Brian Ferneyhough is an infamous figure in contemporary music, regarded with the sort of bafflement and fear once reserved for Berg and Schoenberg. His works are notorious for their mind-boggling complexity. One solo cello piece is written on up to five musical staves - the cello usually requires only one - while the performer is surrounded by a constricting noose of electronic sound. And there is an orchestral piece notated on a 3ft-high score, the pages dense forests of notes. As you might imagine, performing these works can be something of a battle. Pianist Nicolas Hodges plays Ferneyhough's latest solo piano piece, Opus Contra Naturam, in a festival in Durham this week. "You learn the complexities of rhythm in a precise way," he says, "but something different happens in performance. I get the feeling that the whole second movement of this piece is a descent into hell for the performer. One feels more and more trapped as one goes through it. When I first played it, in Darmstadt in Germany this year, I said to a friend that I wasn't sure I was always in control of the speed of descent. He said, 'Don't worry, you always feel like that the first time you play a piece by Brian.'" But is Ferneyhough's music as forbidding as it appears? The organisers of the Durham festival, which celebrates the composer's 60th birthday, think otherwise. Violinist Mieko Kanno, one of the foremost interpreters of Ferneyhough's music, says: "It is no longer valid to present Brian's music as terrifying, hardcore modernism. New music's problem is that it is always presented as something academic and frightening. We want to do something different. We want to celebrate Brian's works as living musical experiences, not dead artefacts."
