Comments from the field John Hancock is general chairperson on the CSX in Jacksonville, Fla. He represents about 2,300 members working for CSX (on the former Seaboard Coast Line), the Florida East Coast and other smaller properties. His territory reaches from Richmond, Va., to Birmingham, Ala., to Miami, Fla. “The issue that is most important in this merger is the use of remote control on locomotives. This technology is in use in Canada and every other country, and it works. “The technology is here and we cannot hide our heads in the sand, just like we could not hide from the introduction of computers. “What the carriers want to do it pit one organization against the other to see who is going to work the remote control for the lowest amount of money. “That will put a lot of railroad workers on the street. “You should vote to unify the UTU and BLE primarily to preserve the jobs of railroad workers. Irrespective of all the other issues, you should vote to preserve jobs. “The bottom line is the preservation of rail jobs, and putting these two groups together would do that. We can work together to dictate how this technology is adopted so that rail jobs are preserved.

John Field Life Works Photo Gallery Home Page John Field Life The Irish composer and pianist John Field has been credited with the invention of the nocturne, a form later explored by Chopin The son of a violinist, Field studied in Dublin with Giordani and was then apprenticed to Muzio Clementi , when his family moved to London in 1793. Clementi took him to France, Germany and Russia in order to demonstrate his pianos. After appearing in a number of London concerts and touring widely, he settled in Russia, in1803, where he became a fashionable performer and teacher. Illness brought him to London again in 1831. This visit was followed by a continental tour after which he returned to Moscow where he died in 1837. John Field Works Although Field wrote seven piano concertos and a number of chamber compositions for piano and strings, his chief claim to fame lies in his more than eighteen nocturnes. John Field
Inasmuch as the year 1914 was the centenary of the nocturne (invented by an Irish composer, John Field), it may be of interest to give a short biography of that remarkable virtuoso, especially as no English memoir is as yet accessible. There are monographs in French, Italian, German and Russian, while the latest memoir is also in German, and was presented as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Leipzig by Heinrich Dessauer in 1911. Let me at once say that all the existing notices of Field - even Dessauer's book and the notice in the new edition of Grove's Dictionary - contain no hint of his early triumphs in his native city of Dublin as a prodigy pianist. Recent research has unearthed much new material which, as here summarized, will prove useful to the future biographer of Field. John Field - the son of Robert Field, of Golden Lane, Dublin - was born on July 26, 1782, and was baptized at St. Werburgh's Church on September 30 of the same year. His father had "conformed" to the Protestant Church, owing to the fierce penal laws against Catholics, and had set up a fashionable academy as professor of the violin. He was also ripieno violin in the orchestra of the Theatre Royal, Crow Street, and was one of the original subscribers to the Charitable Musical Society in 1787. The Fields were certainly a musical family, as the grandfather of the inventor of the nocturne was organist in one of the city churches.

I tried the NetMagazines " 5 magazines for $30 " deal last year, and it's for real. I did it for American Heritage, which costs $20 by itself. Books on Tape has over 120 (!) WWII history audio books. Chris Whitten, Webmaster About three hundred Marines gripped the side of the small knoll, Hill 120. The horseshoe-shaped line was the last defensive position before Henderson Field. John Mielke recalls their last stand. We got together and were holding a position on the reverse slope of the ridge. At that time, there was a moment of panic. Around the base of the ridge, some paratroopers were retiring from their position because they knew we were there. They were calling out the password. One of the things you fear more than anything else is panic. We were cussing them out and giving them a real hard time. As they moved along, I felt sorry for them. I wasn't afraid. Fortunately, they were turned around [by the officers], and many of these men returned to their holes and died there. Then they [the officers] said, "Fix bayonets! And move up." We were going to cover the spot they were evacuating. I was the low man on the squad. I was an ammunition man, so I followed the men up the ridge. The squad leader set up his position, and the other ammunition man who was a bit older than me said, "John, I'll take care of you." That wasn't the case. We left together, but I saw him for just a few moments, and we lost each other in the darkness making it up the ridge. I got up there and had this rifle with no sling on it, and this was awkward.

Canadian Army IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem: Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime. As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans in the Ypres salient.

Beginning in Port Aransas, Texas, on March 31, 1939, and ending at the Library of Congress on June 14, 1939, John Avery Lomax , Honorary Consultant and Curator of the Archive of American Folk Song (now the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center ), and his wife, Ruby Terrill Lomax , recorded approximately 25 hours of folk music from more than 300 performers. These recordings represent a broad spectrum of traditional musical styles, including ballads, blues, children's songs, cowboy songs, fiddle tunes, field hollers, lullabies, play-party songs, religious dramas, spirituals, and work songs. Photographic prints from the Lomaxes' other Southern states expeditions, as well as their other recording trips made under the auspices of the Library of Congress, illustrate the collection, since no photographs from the 1939 Southern States Recording Trip have been identified. Career brief
Soils and landscapes, and any aspect of soil formation and land management are a fair summary of my research interests. In this context, I was a founding member of the CRC LEME Mk I and Mk II (Landscape Environment and Mineral Exploration) and continue to work in regolith research and applications. My fundamental interest in forestry is the critical relationship that exists between trees and soil - the ways in which soil controls the growth of plants, but also the effects that trees have on soils. I have a continuing interest in multipurpose utilisation of trees in agricultural land management, planning and development. Units I coordinate, or in which I teach, include: Earth Systems Australian Soils , Soil Ecology and Management, Regolith, Land Management and Farm Forestry . These units are also offered at the graduate level and some are offered in professional, short course and in web format.
