Exotic Wooden Jewellery
For the past twelve years I have made a range of one off pieces of jewellery using exotic woods, silver, gold and various other materials. Often one piece of jewellery will open up to reveal another. I also enjoy making stands to display my jewellery. I like to use a variety of materials for the warmth of their colours and because they allow a more sculptural approach to design. The ideas for my jewellery come from a wide range of sources. These include antique scientific equipment, ethnographic artefacts such as netsuke and scrimshaw and ideas suggested whilst actually in the process of making.
Metal jewellery
I also work on a range of asymmetrical metal jewellery in partnership with my wife Dawn. The materials used are un-hallmarked silver, brass and various semi-precious stones such as amber, amethyst, garnet, white moonstone and opal triplet. The silver cannot be hallmarked because it has the brass pieces soldered to it. First a grid is imprinted on the silver sheet. Then stencils are arranged in the squares and roller printed. The earrings are cut up using the grid system into set sizes. An opal, garnet, moonstone, amethyst, or piece of ...

Field guides to fauna and flora on St. John, US Virgin Islands (USVI) contained in St. John On Foot And By Car, a self-guided tourbook of St. John in the Caribbean. The book includes field guides to St. John's plants, flowers, trees, birds, fish and other marine inhabitants. The following are a few of St. John’s common flora and fauna that are identified in the guidebook: Sea Urchin - St. John USVI Although most of the fauna and flora on St. John USVI are harmless, visitors to the US Virgin Islands should, however, stay clear of the sea urchin when swimming. The black thorns of the sea urchin have arrow-like tips that are painful and difficult to extract if they become lodged in one’s foot. Lime juice is a St. John remedy used for dissolving embedded spines. Wild Donkeys - St. John USVI Wild donkeys are part of St. John's colorful patchwork of fauna and flora. Watch out when driving or walking down trails on St. John. They often appear quite unexpectedly, caution the authors of St. John On Foot And By Car

A abreaction
An emotional release or discharge after recalling a painful experience that has been repressed because it was not consciously tolerable. Often the release is surprising to the individual experiencing it because of it's intensity and the circumstances surrounding its onset. A therapeutic effect sometimes occurs through partial or repeated discharge of the painful affect. abstract attitude (categorical attitude) This is a type of thinking that includes voluntarily shifting one's mind set from a specific aspect of a situation to the general aspect; It involves keeping in mind different simultaneous aspects of a situation while grasping the essentials of the situation. It can involve breaking a situation down into its parts and isolating them voluntarily; planning ahead ideationally; and/or thinking or performing symbolically. A characteristic of many psychiatric disorders is the person's inability to assume the abstract attitude or to shift readily from the concrete to the abstract and back again as demanded by circumstances. abulia A lack of will or motivation which is often expressed as inability to make decisions or set goals. Often, the reduction in impulse to action and thought is coupled with an indifference or lack of concern about the consequences of action.

John Snow
John Snow, a creative if unassuming London physician, achieved prominence in the mid-nineteenth century as an obstetrician who was among the first to use anesthesia. It is his work in epidemiology, however, which earns him his position as a prototype for CDC's Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases epidemiologists. During the 1830s and 1840s, when severe cholera epidemics threatened London, Snow had become interested in the cause and transmission of the disease. In 1849, he published a brief pamphlet, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera , suggesting that cholera is a contagious disease caused by a poison that reproduces in the human body and is found in the vomitus and stools of cholera patients. He believed that the main, although not only, means of transmission was water contaminated with this poison. This differed from a commonly held theory that diseases are transmitted by inhalation of vapors. The pamphlet caused no great stir, and Snow's argument was only one of many hopeful theories proposed during a time when cholera was causing great distress. Snow was able to prove his theory in 1854, when another severe epidemic of cholera occurred in London. Through painstaking documentation of cholera cases and correlation of the comparative incidence of cholera among subscribers to the city's two water companies, he showed that cholera occurred much more frequently in customers of one water company, the Southwark and Vauxhall. This company drew its water from the lower Thames, where it had become contaminated with London sewage, whereas the other company obtained water from the upper Thames. Snow's evidence soon gained many converts.
