Classical Editor: Rob Barnett Founder Len Mullenger: Len@musicweb.uk.net GERALD FINZI "…when the stars were shining, Fared I forth alone." Gerald Finzi epitomised much that was characteristic of English Music, Literature and Landscape. He was part of that generation of composers who came to maturity in the middle of the 20 th century. He was friends with Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edmund Rubbra, Howard Ferguson, Arthur Bliss and Robin Milford. He had a great love for literature and collected a valuable library of 17 th century books. With the help of his wife, Joy, he edited and prepared the literary remains of that tragic poet and composer Ivor Gurney. Finzi excelled in the setting of the English Language. He had an especial love for the poetry of Thomas Hardy and set many of his poems to music. His contribution to English Lieder was second to none. Finzi wrote two masterpieces - his Cello Concerto , completed in 1955 and his choral work Intimations of Immortality -a setting of words by William Wordsworth Finzi enjoyed the English countryside and this empathy is obvious in his music. His compositions are often bitter-sweet; there is always an awareness of the transience of life. This is the key to understanding his music.

Book Description
Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) was a British composer, editor, author, and outdoorsman/agrarian. Many of his works (a body of fewer than 50) are choral or solo vocal in nature. At the heart of his musical contributions is a unique blend of the metaphysical and mystical with a true love for everything English. Typical of many of the volumes in the Greenwood Press series, this work serves as an awareness tool, introducing an important 20th-century composer labeled variously as a miniaturist, a pastoral composer, and a minor Edwardian musicianbut with a singular style that differed from his contemporaries' yet reflected in part the English tradition of Elgar, Parry, and Vaughan Williams in particular. About the Author
JOHN C. DRESSLER is Professor of Music at Murray State University.

From 1952 he was External Examiner at St.Andrew's University. He had a splenectomy in 1955 but still attended the Three Choirs Festival, Gloucester in 1956. During the festival he took the Vaughan Williamses up Chosen Hill to show them the spot that had inspired In Terra Pax and New Year Music but, while there, they visited the sexton whose children had recently contracted chicken pox. It was after this visit that he developed chicken pox encephalitis. He died in Radcliffe infirmary, Oxford. the night after the B.B.C. broadcast his Cello Concerto. Finzi's library of 18th century music was left to St. Andrew's University and his books were left to Reading University. Books were his companions and in response about two thirds of his music is vocal.
