Cesar Franck A biography and list of works Cesar Franck is considered to be a composer from Belgium, although his cultural origins are often argued about due to the fact that Liege, his birthplace, was officially a part of the French Walloon District before 1830, when it then became Belgium. Regardless, he is still considered to be of Belgian descent. Another site for a thorough biography and in depth study is at http://musicmoz.org/Composition/Composers/F/Franck,_Cesar/ His father was not by any means a wealthy man, and saw the opportunity at once to use little Cesar as a child prodigy which was often the case with young geniuses. This arguably could be the reason that some of Franck’s true musical talent in composition was not perfected until later in his life. In 1830 his father enrolled him in the Liege Conservatoire where he immediately gained prestige as a student. In 1834 his father arranged for a series of concerts and here some of Franck’s compositions were discovered. Franck studied under the influence of such musical talent as Zimmerman, Reicha the teacher of Berlioz, Liszt, and Gounod. In the summer of 1846 Franck left the house of his parents, much to the dismay of his overbearing father, and proceeded to take care of himself by taking on private students, teaching at public schools and religious institutions in the city, and later became the organist of the church of Notre Dame de Lorette in 1847.

This last category includes the well known Panis angelicus of 1872, originally for tenor, organ, harp, cello and double bass. The Panis angelicus was later interpolated into the three-voice Mass of 1861. Chamber Music Franck wrote one Violin Sonata, which, like his symphony, is united by a cyclic use of thematic material that connects the movements. The Observant reform spread widely throughout Italy and into France, Spain and Germany. The great promoters of the movement were St Bernardine of Siena and St John Capistran. The council of Constance, 1415, allowed the French Observant friaries to be ruled by a vicar’ of their own, under the ministergeneral, and the same privilege was soon accorded to other countries. By the end of the middle ages the Observants had some 2400 houses divided into 50 provinces. This movement produced a “half-reform” among the Conventuals or friars of the mitigated observance; it also called forth a number of lesser imitations or congregations of strict observance. After many attempts had been made to bring about a working union among the many observances, in 1517 Leo X. divided the Franciscan order into two distinct and independent bodies, each with its own minister-general, its own provinces and provincials and its own general chapter: (1) The Conventuals, who were authorized to use the various papal dispensations in regard to the observance of poverty, and were allowed to possess property and fixed income, corporately, like the monastic orders: (2) The Observants, who were bound to as close an observance of St Francis’s Rule in regard to poverty and all else as was practically possible.
