Cesar Franck French musical composer, a Belgian by birth, who came of German stock, was born at Liege on the 10th of December 1822. Though one of the most remarkable of modern composers, César Franck laboured for many years in comparative obscurity. After some preliminary studies at Liege he came to Paris in 1837 and entered the conservatoire. He at once obtained the first prize for piano, transposing a fugue at sight to the astonishment of the professors, for he was only fifteen. He won the prize for the organ in 1841, after which he settled down in the French capital as teacher of the piano. His earliest compositions date from this period, and include four trios for piano and strings, besides several piano pieces. Ruth , a biblical cantata was produced with success at the Conservatoire in 1846. An opera was written about this time, but has never been performed. For many years Franck led a retired life, devoting himself to teaching and to his duties as organist, first at Saint Jean-Saint-Francois, then at Ste Clotilde, where he acquired a great reputation as an improviser. He also wrote a mass, heard in 1861, and a quantity of motets, organ pieces and other works of a religious character. Franck was appointed professor of the organ at the Paris conservatoire, in succession to Benoist, his old master, in 1872, and the following year he was naturalized a Frenchman. Until then he was esteemed as a clever and conscientious musician. But he was now about to prove his title to something more. A revival of his early oratorio

Notes on Symphony in D minor (1886-88) Cesar Franck (1822-1890) Although the catalog of his output includes several large orchestral works and a number of symphonic poems, the French composer Cesar Franck produced only one symphony, and that quite late in his career. Perhaps this peculiarity owes something to the general sense that the symphony, for the generations following Beethoven, had become the all but exclusive province of German composers. Nineteenth-century French symphonists were either inclined to rely on the sort of poetic inspiration that was thought to compromise the symphony's "purely musical" integrity (e.g., Hector Berlioz in his Romeo et Juliette), or, like the composer Camille Saint-Saens, failed to bring to the music the tragic intensity Beethoven had made intrinsic to the genre. The prospect of adding to what was beginning to look like a string of noble failures may well have given Franck some anxiety, if the belatedness of his own contribution is any indication. Whatever qualms Franck may have felt would surely have been confirmed by the reception accorded his Symphony in D minor after its 1889 premiere at the Paris Conservatory. At a time when formal orthodoxy formed the basis of artistic integrity, Franck dispensed with the standard four-movement plan, structuring his symphony instead in three movements. Even his decision to deploy the English horn, an instrument much favored by Berlioz, brought criticism, so firm was the French notion of what constituted a proper symphony. In rehearsal the musicians of the Conservatory orchestra were sullen and barely cooperative, and the resulting sub-standard performance no doubt helped to inspire critical dismissal of the symphony as "a chimerical monster."

Dezember 1822 in Lüttich geboren. Sein Vater wünschte sich für seine Söhne eine Virtuosenkarriere und schickte César sowie seinen Bruder Joseph früh an das dortige Königliche Konservatorium. Zu seinen Lehrern zählten u.a. Antoine Jalheau und Louis Daussoigne-Méhul. Als César Franck zwölf Jahre alt war, zog die Familie nach Paris.
