GEMINIANI, Francesco (Xaviero) b Lucca, c1680 d Dublin, 17 September 1762, aged eighty-two He studied first with his father and later with A. Scarlatti and with Corelli, who was the most powerful influence on him. In 1707 he joined the Signoria theatre orchestra in Lucca, and in 1711 became leader of the opera orchestra in Naples. In 1714 he left Italy for London, where he spent most of the rest of his life, moving finally to Ireland. His greatness was as a virtuoso violinist and writer of treatises, though during his lifetime he was overshadowed as a composer by his teacher Corelli and his contemporaries Vivaldi and Handel. He wrote many solo works for violin, eight concerti grossi, numerous other works, six important treatises on violin and harmony and one on playing guitar or cittra. Return to Index

Scarlatti and followed their style and technique. He became a member of the Naples Opera orchestra in 1711. Tartini referred to the flighty and emotional composer as "il furibondo Geminiani". Geminiani toured England in 1714 as a soloist and won wide acclaim for his dazzling technique. He once agreed, conditionally, to a request that he perform on the violin if Handel would accompany him. From 1733 until his death Geminiani lived in Dublin and spent the intervening years working in Paris and London. Francesco Geminiani Works Most of Geminiani's compositions are concerti for violin. His greatest legacy is "The Art of Playing on the Violin" (London, 1751), published in English, and the first book of its kind (twenty-two years before Leopold Mozart 's Violinschule). Diese Sonaten galten damals als noch meisterhafter und kunstvoller als diejenigen Corelli s, dessen Schüler Geminiani war. 1728 bot man dem sich ewig in Geldnöten befindenden Meister den Posten eines irischen Master of State Music an, den er jedoch ablehnte. Zwanzig Jahre später schlug er auch das Angebot des Prince of Wales aus, ihm eine jährliche Rente von 100 Pfund auszusetzen. Zwischen diesen beiden Ereignissen verfaßte und veröffentlichte er ein musiktheoretisches Werk mit dem Titel Guida Armonica sowie eine wichtige Abhandlung, The Art of Playing on the Violin, mit dessen Hilfe beute die korrekten Violintechniken des 18. Jahrhunderts rekonstruiert werden können. In seinen späteren Jahren entwickelte Geminiani eine unglückliche Leidenschaft für Gemälde: er kaufte teuer ein und verkaufte billig, so daß er schließlich im Schuldgefängnis landete, aus dem ihn erst sein einstiger Schüler, Lord Essex, befreite. Geminiani, Francesco Italian composer, one of the leading virtuoso violinists of his time. Born in Luca, he studied under the Italian violinist-composer Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti. In 1714 he went to England and, after 1733, he settled in Ireland, establishing a career as a brilliant performer and teacher. Of his compositions the best known are his concerti grossi, opus 2 and 3. Through his teaching he transmitted the technique and style of Corelli to later generations. The Art of Playing on the Violin, an invaluable 18th-century treatise on violin playing, was for many years misattributed to Geminiani.

BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Francesco Geminiani Francesco Geminiani was born at Lucca, in Tuscany, in December 1687. At an early age he showed considerable talent on the violin after being taught by his father. Later he studied the violin under Carlo Ambrogio Lonati in Milan and then in Rome under the celebrated master, Corelli. It is also considered possible that he studied composition with Alessandro Scarlatti whilst staying in Naples. At the age of 20 he returned to his home town of Lucca where he played the violin in the Town Orchestra for three years. He then moved to Naples in 1711 to take up the position as Leader of the Opera Orchestra. By this time he had become recognized as a brilliant violin virtuoso; indeed the orchestra appears to have experienced some difficulty in following him due to his improvisational virtuosity, or, as the music historian Dr. Burney put it, "his unexpected accelerations and relaxations of measure". In 1714, he tried his fortune in England, where his brilliant violin playing immediately met with great success. London had become a major European music center, thanks in part to Handel, who had himself studied in Rome under Corelli and thus brought a measure of Italian musical style with him. Geminiani gained much support from the aristocracy and leading figures at the Royal Court, and was invited to play the violin before George I, accompanied at the harpsichord by no less than Handel. He soon established himself in London as the leading master of violin-playing, with his concerts, his published compositions, and his theoretical treatises, the first and most important being
