He was acknowledged as a leading composer of madrigals (six volumes) in which he extended the style to extremes with the maximum of expressive intensity anticipating the music of a couple of centuries later. His music exhibited sudden changes of tempo with every emotion being wrung out to maximum effect and the texts were often highly erotic. These madrigals were considered to be so remarkable that they were published shortly after his death as one of the earliest examples of a printed full score. Prince Of Pain: The Strange Case Of Carlo Gesualdo - by Chris Blackford Gesualdo, or to give him his full title, Duke Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, was probably born in 1564 (though some scholars set the date at 1560 or 61), the second son of Fabrizio II Gesualdo and Girolama Borromeo. The Gesualdos were feudal landowners with a modest castle in the Italian village of Gesualdo (60 miles from Naples), a larger one in the ancient town of Venosa, plus a palace in Naples. While details of Carlo's early life are scarce, it is known that he published a competent motet in 1585; yet, five years later he would become better known, indeed notorious, for his extra-musical activities. MARRIAGE AND MURDER In 1584, his elder brother died, leaving Carlo with the responsibility of continuing the Gesualdo line. A year later he married (after gaining papal permission) his first cousin Maria d'Avalos who, it seems, within a few years had begun an affair with a young nobleman, the Duke of Andria. Now, Giulio Gesualdo, one of Carlo's uncles, also fancied Maria but his advances were rejected. Consequently, Giulio informed Carlo of his wife's suspicious meetings with the Duke. In what appears to have been a cunningly laid trap, Carlo left Naples on a hunting trip saying he would be away overnight, only to return unexpectedly to catch his wife and the Duke naked in bed in flagrante delicto The lovers were brutally murdered, if not by Carlo Gesualdo himself, then certainly by others acting on his instructions. Don Carlo Gesualdo (c.1560 - 1613) Italian composer. Born of a noble Neapolitan family (he became Prince of Venosa), he probably studied music with Pomponio Nenna . Temperamentally he was given to excess, and the sensational murder of his first wife and her lover in 1590 was one of the great sixteenth century musical scandals. His second marriage, to Eleonora d'Este, gave him contacts with the musical circle of Ferrara and the poet Tasso whom he befriended. Gesualdo's output consists of six volumes of five-part madrigals, published from 1594; two books of motets and one of responsories; and a few keyboard works. Though from the south, he is linked by his visits to Ferrara and his friendship with Tasso with the 'mannerist' madrigalists of northern Italy. Wayward harmonies in his earlier madrigals develop, in his later ones, into wild and passionate juxtapositions of fast and slow motion, and of total and extremely chromatic harmony. These violent contrasts seem to reflect Gesualdo's neurotic personality; from a stylistic viewpoint his harmonic experiments are more the ultimate outcome of sixteenth century harmonic vocabulary than prophetic of the music that was to come; it was only in the eccentricity of his melodic lines that some monodists followed .
