Doch wer Don Carlo Gesualdos Ruhm als Komponist allein auf die Gewalttat zurückführt, der verkennt die enormen kompositorischen Leistungen des italienischen Fürsten von Venosa. Über die Kindheit und Jugend des Fürsten ist nicht viel bekannt. Ein erst vor knapp 20 Jahren aufgefundener Brief korrigiert das bis dahin in der Zeit zwischen 1560 und 1562 vermutete Geburtsdatum auf den 8. März 1566. Schon früh kommt der berühmte Lautenspieler am musikliebenden Hof seines Vaters mit der Tonkunst in Berührung; jedoch kennen wir keine Details seiner musikalischen Ausbildung, die ihn zu einem der führenden Komponisten seiner Zeit macht. Nach vier Jahren scheinbar glücklicher Ehe des fürstlichen Paares und der Geburt eines Sohnes ereignet sich der fürchterliche Mord an Donna Maria und ihrem Liebhaber . Die Rachedrohungen der konsternierten Familien und die erhitzten Gemüter der Zeitgenossen zwingen den Fürsten dazu, sich für einige Zeit auf Burg Gesualdo zu verschanzen, doch der detailliert dokumentierten richterlichen Untersuchung dieser »Tötung im Affekt« entspringen keinerlei Konsequenzen, und das dramatische Ereignis wird bald vergessen. Aber Gesualdo peinigen zeit seines Lebens heftige Gewissensqualen: in den folgenden Jahren veranlaßt er den Bau eines Kapuzinerklosters mit der Kapelle Santa Maria delle Grazie, deren Altarbild ihn selbst in der Position des um Vergebung bittenden Sünders darstellt. Auch in seinem Testament erbittet er die Absolution und bestimmt weitere Gelder zugunsten des Baues von Kapellen und des Lesens von Messen für sein Seelenheil.

Piccolo omaggio dell’ISMEZ a un compositore assai citato o magnificato – ma in Italia forse ancora troppo poco studiato ed eseguito – per di più appartenente a quell’area geografica dell’Italia che precipuamente interessa l’Istituto. Hij volgde les in muziektheorie, zang en het bespelen van verschillende muziekinstrumenten w.o. luit bij Pomponio Nenna. Deze werkte, evenals Dentices en de Vlaming Giovanni De Macque, in de academie van Gesualdo's vader. Als zijn oudere broer in 1585 overlijdt, is hij genoodzaakt zijn verwend aristocratisch leventje op te geven. Hij wordt regerend vorst van Venosa. Het componeren gebeurt enkel in zijn vrije tijd. Nog een andere plicht wordt hem opgelegd: huwen binnen zijn eigen stand. Zijn keuze valt op de beeldschone Maria d'Avalos. Zij schenkt hem een zoon en een dochter. Maar dit geluk is van korte duur. Op 26 oktober 1590 worden zijn vrouw en haar minnaar Don Fabrizio de Carafa betrapt en... zonder pardon vermoord. Ook zijn dochtertje wordt, wegens twijfel aan zijn vaderschap, uit de weg geruimd. Hoe groot het aandeel van Gesualdo bij dit alles was, is niet geweten. In elk geval trekt hij zich na deze tragische feiten, om aan eventuele wraakacties te ontkomen, terug in het versterkte slot van Gesualdo, nabij Napels. Welke werken voor het dramatische jaar ontstonden, is niet geweten. Vermoedelijk zijn de eerste twee madrigalenbundels, de canzonetta's en gagliarda's van voor deze tijd. De canzonetta's hebben nog niets van het dramatische karakter van de latere madrigalen. De gaillardes bieden voorbeelden van zuiver instrumentale muziek. Het zijn dansen om met vier te spelen, 'per suonare le viole', naar een danstype dat toen bijzonder populair was.
