GIBBONS, ORLANDO
Gibbon judged civilization and progress was the measure in which the happiness of men is secured, and of that happiness he considered political freedom an essential condition. He was essentially humane; and it is worthy of notice that he was in fa~our of the abolition of slavery, while humane men like his friend Lord Sheffield, Dr Johnson and Boswell were opposed to the antislavery movement. 1794—1894, by R. H. T. Ball (1895). (J. B. B.) Assam, H. lar of Arakan and Pegu, H. entelloides of Tenasserim (fig.), and H. agilis of Sumatra are well-known representatives. A female of the Hainan gibbon (H. hainanus) in confinement changed from uniform sooty-black (without the white frontal I/I- J, - ~:‘ .~t’1i~ 2 -s - -~i~-~ ‘ The Tenasserim Gibbon (Hylobates enlelloides). band of the black phase of the hulock) to puce-grey; but it is probable that this was only an individual, or at most a sexual, peculiarity. The range of the genus extends from the southern bank of the Bramaputra in Assam to southern China, the Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra and Borneo. (R. L.*) GIBBONS, JAMES (1834— ), American Roman Catholic cardinal and archbishop, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on the 23rd of July 1834, and was educated at St Charles College, Ellicott City, Maryland, and St Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, where he finished his theological training and was ordained priest

Gibbons, Orlando 1583-1625, English organist and composer. He became organist of the Chapel Royal about 1603, court virginalist in 1619, and organist at Westminster Abbey in 1623. His compositions include English anthems and services, consort and keyboard music, and madrigals. His brothers, Edward Gibbons (1568-c.1650), who was his teacher, and Ellis Gibbons (1573-1603), were also composers. Only a few pieces of their works survive. His son Christopher Gibbons (1615-76) was organist of Westminster Abbey and left some anthems and string compositions. See E. H. Fellowes, Orlando Gibbons and His Family (2d ed. 1952).

    Gibbons, Orlando ( b Oxford, 1583 - d Canterbury, 5 June, 1625)
Gibbons came from a musical family and was a chorister (1596-8), and later student (1599-1603) at King's College, Cambridge. He joined the Chapel Royal in c1603 and was one of its organists by 1615, and a senior organist in 1625. In 1619 he became a virginal player at court, and in 1623 he was appointed the organist of Westminster Abbey. He took the Mus.B. at Cambridge in 1606, and the D.Mus. at Oxford in 1622. Gibbons is one of the most important composers of sacred music in the early seventeenth century: he wrote several Anglican services, and over 30 anthems, some imposing and dramatic (such as O clap you hands), and others more colourful and expressive (such as This is the record of John). His instrumental music is also important as it includes over 30 elaborate viol fantasias and over 40 masterly keyboard pieces. His fourteen madrigals, from 1612, are generally serious in tone (such as The silver swanne

He entered the choir of King's College, Cambridge, where his brother Edward was Master of the Choristers, in 1596, and matriculated in 1598. From 1602 to 1603 he earned his living by composing music for special occasions, and in 1605, aged 21, he was appointed organist of the Chapel Royal, a post he held for the rest of his life. He was awarded a degree in music at Cambridge in 1606, and a doctorate at Oxford in 1622. He enjoyed considerable Royal patronage, and in 1623 became organist at Westminster Abbey. He died of an apoplectic fit. p Madrigals and Motets of Five Parts: Apt for Viols and Voyces Gibbons' other works include about forty anthems and other church music, music for viols, keyboard pieces, and expressive madrigals, such as 'The Silver Swan'.
