Introduction - The Guildhall Strings Those who have admired the fine ensemble playing of the Guildhall Strings over the years, especially in the various music festivals up and down the country, will welcome this their first (but hopefully not last) appearance on the Hyperion label. The Guildhall Strings play standing up (except for the three cellists) in a semi-circle creating a freedom of communication impossible in traditional orchestral seating. Since there is no conductor, all the players contribute to the overall shape of the music, as members of a string quartet do. As a Daily Telegraph critic has written, "They are as much a pleasure to watch as to listen to." Armstrong Gibbs string works on this album The collection commences with the Prelude, Andante and Finale.

The Composer - his life and family Life of Armstrong Gibbs Cecil Armstrong Gibbs was born in 1889 at 'The Vineyards,' Great Baddow, the first child of Ida Gibbs (née Whitehead ) and David Cecil Gibbs, soap and chemicals manufacturer. His mother died when he was only two years old, so he was brought up by five maiden aunts who took it in turns to stay at Great Baddow and run the household. So apparent were his musical gifts at a young age, that the aunts begged the boy's father to send him abroad to receive a musical education. However David Cecil, who had himself been educated in Germany, was determined to give his son the benefit of an English public school education. Consequently the young Armstrong was sent first to a preparatory school on the Hove / Brighton borders and then on to Winchester College. From Winchester, Armstrong Gibbs gained an exhibition and a sizarship to Trinity College Cambridge to read history. After completing his History Tripos in 1911 he stayed on at Cambridge to take his Mus. B. During that period he received composition and harmony lessons from E. J. Dent and Charles Wood and studied the organ briefly under Cyril Rootham. Realising that he could not make a living from composition alone, he decided to take up teaching. He spent just over a year at Copthorne School, East Grinstead, before returning to his old preparatory school, 'The Wick.' Although he was not able to compose as much as he had hoped, he did write some songs to poems of Walter de la Mare. On being asked to produce a play for the headmaster's retirement in 1919, Gibbs approached de la Mare directly and was delighted when the author produced the play 'Crossings' for him to set to music.

    ARMSTRONG GIBBS (1889-1960)
    Songs
Excerpts from the sleeve notes On completing his studies, Gibbs embarked on a teaching career. In due course (1915) he joined the staff of his old prep school where, in June 1919, he composed the music for a play which he had asked the poet Walter de la Mare to write in honour of the headmaster’s retirement. The quality of his contribution to Crossings, as the play was called, was such that the conductor of the occasion, the young Adrian Boult, insisted that he should now take composition seriously. Although he had married in 1918, family support again came to his aid and enabled him to enrol at the Royal College of Music for a year’s study under Ralph Vaughan Williams. Commissions to write incidental music for a London production of Maeterlinck’s play The Betrothal in 1920, and the Cambridge University production of the Oresteia of Aeschylus in 1921, together with the publication of a comic opera, The Blue Peter (1923), by the Carnegie Collection of British Music, confirmed his reputation as a gifted composer. It soon became clear that his special talent was for songs, and in particular the setting of words by his friend Walter de la Mare. Of the 162 songs he was eventually to write, no fewer than 38 are to de la Mare’s poems. They range in mood from the dream-like serenity of ‘Silver’, to the jaunty good-humour of ‘Five Eyes’, and, without exception, capture the unique quality of the poet’s unusual imagination. Fanciful, mysterious, disturbing – de la Mare’s world is that of a child who knows that appearances are not always what they seem. Gibbs matches the poet’s vision with music that has an equally deceptive simplicity. In all essentials, composer and poet speak with one voice – an affinity that de la Mare was happy to acknowledge, and which he thought could only be said of one other composer: Herbert Howells.

    ARMSTRONG GIBBS (1889-1960)
    'Dale and Fell'
Excerpts from the sleeve notes We tend to remember Armstrong Gibbs for the once-popular slow waltz Dusk, and as a composer of songs (principally settings of his beloved Walter de la Mare, 1873-1956). Also, possibly, for one-time popular choral ballads sung by amateur choirs up and down England. Gibbs was a prolific and versatile composer, his opus numbers reaching to 136 with many shorter works outside the numbered canon. Apart from de la Mare, the names associated with that enterprise are now celebrated: it was produced by his Cambridge mentor Edward J Dent, already a pioneering opera producer. Dent suggested that an equally young Adrian Boult be asked to conduct. Gibbs soon found that, unwittingly, he had set in train the stepping-stones to a musical career. Boult was so taken with the music that he determined that Gibbs should follow his vocation and offered to pay the young composer's tuition fees at the Royal College of Music from his own pocket. Gibbs had been married in 1916 and by now had a son, so his domestic responsibilities stood in the way of giving up his job. But his wife encouraged him to accept, and, despite the financial insecurity, it proved to be a launching-pad of quite remarkable effectiveness, crowned by an orchestral suite of his Crossings music appearing at the 1920 Promenade Concerts at Queen's Hall.

This unusual collection is a mixture of unfamiliar and familiar names, although the latter usually have not been associated with composition. Almost every amateur chorister in the English-speaking world knows John Rutter's arrangements. His original choral works are performed with some frequency, but who knows his purely instrumental works? The Suite that is recorded here was published in 1973, and it is made up of English folksongs arranged in the style of Ralph Vaughan Williams. George Melachrino and his eponymous string orchestra made a series of "easy listening" records in the 1950s and 60s. His brief and charming Les jeux comes from a larger collection of music describing facets of everyday life. The ballet Les Sylphides , as most music-lovers know, is based on music by Chopin, yet fewer people are aware that it was Roy Douglas who arranged and scored that music. The
