Life
  • Throughout his musical career Ginastera remained interested in linking and expressing Nationalist tradition or the Argentine "gauchesco" culture with modern, international music theories. He let the local color of society (the dances and folk songs) influence his melodic and rhythmic structure. In addition to his Nationalist expression Ginastera was very interested in international or cosmopolitan musical ideas. He incorporated European and modern composition techniques in his compositions. While he loved the experimental aspects of his contemporaries, Ginastera believed that European Classical and Romantic concepts and instruments should be revisited and never forgotten. So Ginastera created his own sound through the melding of new and old ideas.

Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) Quartet No. 1 Op. 20 (1948) Pampeana No. 2, Op. 21, Rhapsody for Cello and Piano (1950) Quartet No. 1 Op. 20 (1948) Alberto Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires and received a musical education starting at an early age. He gained national recognition after the performance of an Orchestral Suite from his Ballet Panambi (1937) at the Teatro Colon. He achieved this prominence even before completing his musical studies. He gained international acclaim with the performance of his Second String Quartet by the Juilliard Quartet in Washington, D.C. in 1958. By his own account, he saw his composing career as consisting of three creative periods. The first 1937-48, he called "Objective Nationalism", in which he used Argentine folk music in his compositions. Argentine folk music is a multi-cultural fabric containing strands from Native Indian, African, European and "Criollo" (or Latin American) peoples. Ginastera was particularly attracted to the music of the Pampas - Argentine cowboy music. His most famous work in this genre was the ballet Estancia Rodeo (1942) and Billy the Kid (1938), Ginastera would quote actual folk tunes.

18. Ginastera, Alberto (1916 - 1983)
Biographical sketch and summaries of stage works and orchestral and chamber music.
http://www.hnh.com/composer/ginaster.htm
Ginastera, Alberto (1916 - 1983)
Alberto Ginastera occupied a leading position in the musical world of his native Argentina, where he exercised a strong influence over a younger generation of composers. He later spent much time in Europe, settling in Geneva. His style of writing develops from overt nationalism to a flexible application of the serialist principles proposed by Schoenberg. Stage Works The ballet Estancia is evocatively Argentinian, with its echoes of gaucho life. The opera Don Rodrigo, based on a twelve-note series, makes original use of spacial effects, while the operas Bomarzo and Beatrix Cenci draw also on Renaissance forms, set, as they are, in Renaissance Italy. Orchestral Music Ginastera's orchestral music includes a concerto for harp, two concertos for piano and concertos for violin and for cello. Ollantay, three symphonic movements, Pampeana No.3, a symphonic pastoral, and Overture to a Criollo Faust, have strongly Latin American elements. Chamber Music
