LARGO 5122 These three genuine Argentinean dances mark the beginning of an imposing series of compositions in which Alberto Ginastera came to terms with the culture and traditions of his native country. Estancia , the most successful ballet music of this period, is a single movement stage work based on scenes from Argentinean country life which was given its world premiere in 1943. Ollantay , clearly demonstrates why Ginastera was able to enjoy his first major success as a composer and his being awarded the "Premio Nacional" and the "Premio Municipal". The music, which was composed before Estancia and Ollantay, demonstrates Ginastera's abilities in movement structure and form, and gives one a first timid appearance of the "Latin American" feeling of the composer who would later create Estancia and Pampeana Nr. 3. Peter Mennin SYMPHONY NO.4, Alberto Ginastera MILENA Phyllis Curtin, soprano Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) Alberto Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires and received a musical education starting at an early age. He gained national recognition after the performance of an Orchestral Suite from his Ballet Panambi (1937) at the Teatro Colon. He achieved this prominence even before completing his musical studies. He gained international acclaim with the performance of his Second String Quartet by the Juilliard Quartet in Washington, D.C. in 1958. By his own account, he saw his composing career as consisting of three creative periods. The first 1937-48, he called "Objective Nationalism", in which he used Argentine folk music in his compositions. Argentine folk music is a multi-cultural fabric containing strands from Native Indian, African, European and "Criollo" (or Latin American) peoples. Ginastera was particularly attracted to the music of the Pampas - Argentine cowboy music. His most famous work in this genre was the ballet Estancia (1941) which is about life on a cattle ranch (estancia) Like Aaron Copland’s Rodeo (1942) and Billy the Kid (1938), Ginastera would quote actual folk tunes. His second period "Subjective Nationalism" 1948-56, the period of the String Quartet No. 1, the composer uses rhythms and creates folk-like melodies without actual quotation - much like the later work of Bartok and Kodaly.

When the Piano Concerto had its world premier during the Second Inter-American Music Festival at Washington, D.C. on April 22, 1961, Irving Lowen wrote glowingly of the Argentine and his work in the usually austere scholarly journal "The Musical Quarterly": "Good as the Festival was, there was one figure who towered head and shoulders above his colleagues-Alberto Ginastera." His "Sonata for Piano" was composed in 1952 for the Pittsburg Contemporary Music Festival on commission from the Carnegie Institute and the Pennsylvania College for Women. Johanna Harris, pianist-wife of the eminent American composer Roy Harris, premiered the Ginastera Sonata at the Pittsburg Festival on November 29, 1952.
