Home Page Umberto Giordano Life The opera composer Umberto Giordano studied at the Naples Conservatoire and achieved his first success with the opera "Mala Vita" in Rome in 1892 Subsequent operas were far more romantic and include "Andrea Chenier" which was well received in Milan in 1896. His last completed opera, "Il re", was staged in Milan in 1929. Puccini or, even more, to that of Leoncavallo Umberto Giordano Works
The opera Andrea Chenier deals with the fate of a poet of that name in the French Revolution, to which he finally fell a victim with his beloved Madeleine. Arias from the work are popular in recital, including the tenor arias Un dì all'azzurro spazio, Si, fui soldato and Come un bel dì di maggio and the soprano aria La mamma morta. The tenor aria, from the less successful opera "Fedora" staged in 1898, Amor ti vieta is popular with singers. Umberto Giordano Operas The Operas of U. Umberto Giordano (1867-1948) Umberto Giordano was born in Foggia, Italy on August 27, 1867. His father was a chemist who hoped that his son would become a fencing champion, but Giordano had musical aspirations. Despite his parent's objections, he enrolled at the Naples Conservatory in 1882, where he studied for seven years. During this time Giordano composed his first opera, Marina, for a competition sponsored by the publisher Edoardo Sonzogno. Giordano placed sixth in the competition, but this sufficed to attract the notice of Sonzogno, who commissioned the composer to write his next work, Mala vita, which premiered in Rome in 1892. Because of its unrelenting depiction of a Neapolitan prostitute's wretched existence ("Mala vita" means "the miserable life"), the work was considered rather scandalous by Italian audiences but was popular in Austria and Germany. back to top
