Nace en Novospasskoie (Rusia) el 1 de junio de 1804. Hoy Novospasskoie ha cambiado su nombre por el de su más distinguido ciudadano, Glinka. Hasta el año de 1810, la única educación musical de Glinka fueron las canciones populares que con dedicación le cantaba su niñera. Este dato es importante, pues Glinka es el creador del nacionalismo ruso en música. En 1817 ingresa en el Instituto Pedagógico de San Petersburgo, donde recibe clases de piano (con Field, Aumann y Zeuner), teoría (Fuchs), y violín (Böhm). Acabado los estudios, se traslada a Italia en 1830 por motivos de salud. Allí residirá durante tres prósperos años: estudia en el Conservatorio de Milán, entrando en contacto con la música de Donizetti y Bellini ; consigue un contrato con Ricordi para editar su música y conoce a Felix Mendelssoh n-Bartholdy y Hector Berlioz En 1833 se traslada a Berlín donde estudia contrapunto con Siegfried Dehn. Al año siguiente regresa a Rusia por la muerte de su padre; allí permanece más de lo que tenía previsto y comienza a interesarse por la música rusa.

His two operas, A Life for the Czar (1836) and Russlan and Ludmilla (1842), marked the beginning of a characteristically Russian style of music. His best symphonic work was the incidental music to the play Prince Kholmsky.

Dann wieder in Petersburg; hier entstand seine Oper "Iwan Sussanin" ("Das Leben für den Zaren" Petersburg 1836), die erste russische Nationaloper, auf die Ruslan und "Ljudmila" (Petersburg 1842) folgte. In die jabre 1844-1847 fällt die zweite Auslandsreise Glinkas nach Paris (erneute Begegnung mit Berlioz), Madrid und Sevilla (Volkloristische Studien). 1852 ist Glinka in Paris; die jahre 1854-1856 verbringt er in der Nähe Petersburgs.

    table next Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804-1857) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka was a Russian composer, the first whose music won general acceptance outside Russia; show various "nationalist" traits in his works. Regarded therefore as the "father" of Russian music. Studied piano with Field; visited Italy and Germany before bringing out operas "Ivan Susanin" (1836) and "Ruslan and Ludmila"; made trips abroad later, dying in Berlin. Also composed "Jota aragonesa" and other works in imitation-Spanish style; chamber music for strings and for wind; many piano pieces and songs.
