Zoon van een houtvester, zou het ouderlijk huis zijn ontvlucht en als reizend muzikant terecht zijn gekomen in Praag, waar hij zich ca. 1731 liet inschrijven aan de universiteit. De Oostenrijkse vorst Lobkowitz stelde hem in staat zich in 1736 te Wenen te vestigen, waar een Italiaanse prins, Antonio Melzi, zijn mecenas werd en hem in de leer deed bij Sammartini. In Milaan ontwikkelde Gluck zich tot operacomponist en in 1741 werd zijn eerste opera, Artaserse, opgevoerd. Deze opera en de andere die spoedig volgden, oogstten zoveel succes dat Gluck diverse opdrachten kreeg en in 1745 uitgenodigd werd in Londen. Van 1746 tot 1752 was hij verbonden aan een operagezelschap dat in Pillnitz bij Dresden en in Wenen opera's van hem opvoerde; daarna trad hij als kapelmeester van de theatergroep van Mingotti op in Kopenhagen, Praag en Napels. In 1750 trad hij in het huwelijk met de 16-jarige Marianne Pergin en twee jaar later vestigde hij zich in Wenen. In 1756 werd hij door de paus tot Ridder van de Gulden Spoor benoemd; hij noemde zich sindsdien bij voorkeur Ritter von Gluck of le Chevalier Gluck. Reeds door de kennismaking met Händels oratoria en met de opera's van Lully en Rameau was Gluck tot andere inzichten gekomen aangaande opera. Tot dan toe had hij zich vnl. aangepast aan de zgn. opera seria, die voor een waarlijk dramatische ontwikkeling geen mogelijkheden bood. In Wenen maakte hij kennis met andere muziekdramatische vormen: de opéra-comique, de vaudeville en het ballet, waarin werd gestreefd naar dramatische beweeglijkheid, realisme en eenvoud. Dit alles bracht Gluck tot het schrijven van een opera in nieuwe stijl, op een libretto van Rainero Calzabigi en G. Angiolini

The form underwent various changes and reforms and the name of Gluck is associated with a tendency to greater operatic realism, the drama subsumed in the music, his principles expounded in his introduction to his opera Alceste in 1767. Reform opera, exemplified in the later work of Gluck, represented a reaction against the stylised forms of later Baroque opera. Gluck achieved considerable success in Vienna, Paris, and elsewhere in Europe.
