Composers Biography Languages Louis Moreau Gottschalk Life Photo Gallery Home Page Louis Moreau Gottschalk Life Gottschalk was born in New Orleans in 1829. From early in his childhood, he was exposed to the French and African-tinged Caribbean folk music that characterized the music of the Creoles. It was this bombastic music that left the deepest impression on Gottschalk, later permeating his works and eventually spurring him on to international fame. The musical climate of New Orleans in the 1830s is revealed in the childhood of Gottschalk. Creoles made up about 50 percent of the city at that time, with the majority of the population residing in what was called Old New Orleans, east of Canal. Gottschalk, too, was of Creole descent and was raised primarily by his grandmother and his African-American nurse, both natives of the island of Saint-Dominique. Certainly Creole melodies were a natural part of the Gottschalk household. Young Gottschalk would stand on the third floor gallery and listen to the sounds of the street floating on the sultry city breeze. Music filled the streets of New Orleans then, as it still does today, and flowed among the houses which remained open to the street most of the year.

Hij werd geboren op 8 mei 1829 in New Orleans, de bakermat van de Amerikaanse muziek. Zijn vader was van Spaans-Joodse afkomst, maar geboren in Engeland, en zijn moeder van Frans-Caribische afkomst. Gottschalk is ook de eerste componist die Amerikaanse volksliedjes integreerde in zijn composities, nog lang voordat Dvorák de Amerikaanse componisten aanspoorde om dit te doen. Greetings - My name is L.M. Gottschalk. Well, actually, it is not really - I have appropriated this alias from that great original American composer of the 19th century. The real Gottschalk - who also went under the pen-name of Seven Octaves and dedicated works to himself through it! - was a brilliant pianist often compared favourably with Sigismund Thalberg, Frederick Chopin and Franz Liszt. Gottschalk's compositional style was very much like his performing one - rhapsodic, syncopated, exquisitely melodic, voluptuous, and often exotic and dreamy. He conjured up fantasy worlds of Creole splendour in the salons of 19th century Paris. After reading this little history lesson you might think that this page will be dedicated to that adorable composer. I am afraid to say that this isn't so - at least, not at the moment. This page will really host an art gallery of paintings which I hold in similar esteem to Gottschalk's compositions. Before me there were no piano concerts except in particular cases, that is to say, when a very great name arriving from Europe placed itself by its celebrity before the public, which, willing or unwilling, through curiosity or fashion rather than from taste, made it a duty to go and see the lion... Now, piano concerts are chronic, they have even become epidemic: ... I cannot help feeling a pride in having contributed within the modest limits of my powers in extending through our country the knowledge of music." Life and Accomplishments Gottschalk was a pioneer both as a performer and composer. As a widely touring pianist, he helped popularize piano concertizing in the U.S. As a composer, much of Gottschalk's output foreshadows ragtime and jazz. Gottschalk also championed the technique of quoting American tunes in certain of his compositions. An interesting set of reviews on Gottschalk can be found in selected issues of Dwight's Journal of Music.
