S. Frederick Starr, Louis Moreau Gottschalk (University of Illinois Press 1995; trade paper 2000) Louis Moreau Gottschalk was a pioneer of American music, one of our first truly national celebrities and a beloved citizen of the Western Hemisphere. Frederick Starr's 1995 biography is a work of sweeping scholarship, all the more impressive for its lucid and engaging style. Gottschalk was born in 1829 in New Orleans to a French Creole mother from the Caribbean island of Saint-Domingue and a Jewish father with roots in northern Europe. By the time he died at the age of 40 in Rio de Janeiro, he and his music were known worldwide. Educated in Paris, Gottschalk was the disciple and peer of the major Romantic musicians, writers and artists of his time, including Berlioz, Liszt, Chopin, Dumas, Hugo and Longfellow. After Chopin's death, Gottschalk was hailed as the greatest pianist in the world. As a young man, Gottschalk began his career as a piano virtuoso in France, where virtuosos and savants were all the rage. His debut was attended by Chopin, Thalberg and other Paris musical luminaries, shortly before the Revolution swept Paris and the rest of France. He also began composing his own works at this time, and was established as a composer and virtuoso performer before entering his 20s. Following successful tours of Switzerland and Spain, Gottschalk returned to America in 1852, where he became one of the chief figures in the beginnings of the great debate over the nature of American music in relation to European music. Gottschalk's music and performances became emblematic of the conflict between monarchy and democracy, as reflected in classical and modern, European and American musical styles.

Gottschalk was born in New Orleans in 1829.
From early in his childhood, he was exposed to the French and African-tinged Caribbean folk music that characterized the music of the Creoles. It was this bombastic music that left the deepest impression on Gottschalk, later permeating his works and eventually spurring him on to international fame. The musical climate of New Orleans in the 1830s is revealed in the childhood of Gottschalk. Creoles made up about 50 percent of the city at that time, with the majority of the population residing in what was called Old New Orleans, east of Canal. Gottschalk, too, was of Creole descent and was raised primarily by his grandmother and his African-American nurse, both natives of the island of Saint-Dominique. Certainly Creole melodies were a natural part of the Gottschalk household. Young Gottschalk would stand on the third floor gallery and listen to the sounds of the street floating on the sultry city breeze. Music filled the streets of New Orleans then, as it still does today, and flowed among the houses which remained open to the street most of the year.

AMERICAN ORIGINALS
Pianist Frank French interprets masterpieces by the New Orleans composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Decades before ragtime, Gottschalk was writing syncopated pieces which draw from the ethnis styles he heard in his many travels to South America and the Caribbean. French gives a freshness and rhythmic vitality to this music which elude many pianists. "...vivid virtuosic music...colorful melodies set against syncopated rhythms..."

GOTTSCHALK, Louis Moreau
b New Orleans, 8 May 1829
d Tijuca, Brazil, 18 December 1869, aged forty
He was the son of a London-born merchant. Showing musical aptitude before the age of four, he was sent to Paris to study in 1842. He gave his first piano recital at fifteen and soon became a virtuoso; his piano compositions became extremely popular. His father's death in 1853 compelled him to work fiercely to support his six younger brothers and sisters, and he gave an enormous number of concerts. A scandal in 1867 with a girl student forced him to flee to South America, and he never returned to the USA. His strenuous concert tours eventually killed him. His output included: two symphonies; a piano concerto and other works for piano and orchestra; eight chamber works (all lost); six operas (five of them lost); some songs with piano, and a great deal of piano music, much of it lost, and the rest at present unfashionable. By C. Michael Bailey Viridiana Productions is a music company based in Sandpoint Idaho that specializes in the production and promotion of a music genre called Terra Verde (literally "Green Earth"). Promotional material from the company describes Terra Verde as a "contemporary and distinctly American musical art form, fusing the elements of European romanticism, the New World Ethnic styles, such as ragtime, jazz, Latin American, and country." This label beats this critic to the punch by championing Nineteenth-Century composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk as a forefather of Ragtime, Jelly Roll Morton, and Jazz. For this reason alone is this "new genre" worthy of comment. Ragtime music, not unlike "classical music," differs from Jazz in the respect that it and its most ardent supporters resist improvisation. Ragtime pieces are carefully and meticulously composed with very specific instructions directing the artist on how to perform a given piece. They are typically of three or four sections or parts, each sixteen measures long, possessing a syncopated melody juxtaposed against a duple rhythm. Not unlike the rigors imparted on the Japanese Haiku in literature, Ragtime is meant to be composed in close confines. There should be little surprise that Ragtime experienced growing pains as in excess of 2000 rags were composed between the years of 1897 and 1925. Musical genesis occurred when Jazz split off from Ragtime, fueled by one Ferdinand Joseph La Menthe, AKA "Jelly Roll" Morton, when he first sat down and syncopated his way fully into the Blues.
