Gounod, Charles (1818 - 1893)
Gounod had a particularly strong influence on French composers from the middle of the 19th century. He was educated at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1837. His return to Paris in 1843, after developing a wide knowledge of earlier and contemporary music abroad, brought a position as an organist. He achieved considerable success in the theatre, particularly with the opera Faust in 1859, but the Franco- Prussian War of 1870 and a period spent in England, brought a largely unprofitable interruption. His influence on English vocal music, however, was perceptible and not always for the best. Operas Goethe's drama Faust had the widest influence over artists of all kinds during the 19th century, a period when Faust might be identified by some with the heroic artist and champion of freedom from conventional restraints. Gounod's opera Faust is concerned principally with Faust's seduction of Marguerite, whose own redemption is secured, while Faust remains the prey of the devil Mephistopheles. Recital arias from Faust include the Mephistophelean Le veau d'or (The Golden Calf), the tenor Salut! demeure and Marguerite's Jewel Song, Ah! je ris. Choral societies have enjoyed the famous Soldiers' Chorus, while the Walpurgisnacht ballet music has provided orchestras with an item of concert repertoire. Recommended Recordings Faust: Ballet Music

Short biography
http://www.edinboro.edu/cwis/music/cordell/student-sm.html
Charles Gounod
Charles Gounod, born in France in June 1818, was one of the country's best composers of the late nineteenth century. Gounod studied at the Paris Conservatoire, and "after studies with Reicha, Halevy and Le Sueur, he won the Prix de Rome in 1838" (Sadie 1992, II:498) Gounod developed an interest in 16th century polyphonic music during the period of his Prix de Rome, and while in Rome, Gounod composed a mass and a Requiem. After his interest in religious music declined he began his career as an opera composer. He was virtually unknown on the Parisian musical scene, but thanks to the influence of mezzo soprano Pauline Viardot, who was favourably impressed by his musical abilities when she first met him in 1849, he received an Opera commission to set Sapho with Emile Augier as librettist. The contract stipulated that Viardot was to assume the title role and the work was to be a two-act curtain raiser. (Sadie 1992, II:498) Sapho launched Gounod's career as an opera composer, but Faust was his first great opera. Gounod died in 1893 in Paris after completing twelve operas.

Gounod's masterpiece, 'Faust', an engaging trivialisation of part 1 of Goethe's play, was performed in Paris in 1859, Neither 'La Reine de Saba' (1862) nor 'Romeo et Juliette' was especially successful, though the latter work has been staged frequently in recent years. 'Mireille' (1864) still holds the stage in France. He died in St Cloud.
Gounod exercised a strong influence on the operas of Bizet and Massenet. At its best, his music possesses a gentle charm and an agreeable melodic flow.
